2005 Mint Sets SMS

2005 Mints Sets to Receive SMS Designation
Posted at 6/14/2005 7:00:05 PM
Earlier this year, the Mint announced that its 2005 Uncirculated Coin Sets, commonly referred to as Mint Sets, would include satin-finish examples of circulating coinage. NGC has examined many of these recently-released Mint Sets, and has made the determination to designate these coins as SMS, for Special Mint Set.

I guess there's your answer to what pcgs is going to do. Do they not follow the other companies on things like designations and services or is it my imagination?

Lots of luck to them telling what's a business strike and SMS. I have opened 3 sets and have both.

If pcgs does do a special designation what will they do about the 2004-d state quarters that are satin and sms from the same dies? Will that just mean more regrade $ or is it a huge can of worms of problems similar to 1965-1967 where you can send the same coin in every day of the week and get a different desgnation?
  • Boy!, mine do not look satin.image

  • NGC --> SMS is cool, but if you need it in the cello to know, then what's the point of a designation?

As datentype said, the 04D quarters look like the 05P quarters. Both look satin and 05D quarters
may not be too obvious if they aren't in the cello...

I hope PCGS doesn't follow as the population could be screwed with too easy in my opinion.

    Hmmmmmmm...

  • The 2005 Mint Sets that NGC has examined show a wide variety of production and handling quality. Even within a single set, coins can range from heavily frosted to mostly brilliant. While some coins are obvious specimens, others closely resemble regular circulating issues. Because of the inconsistency in quality of these coins, to assure that coins submitted to NGC receive the SMS designation, they must be submitted in their original mint packaging.

A wonderful quality 2005 D SMS dime showing mild cameo contrast. This type of semi-prooflike surface has been seen on some 2005 Mint Set coins. Image NGC Photo Proof.
In addition to showing coins of varied surface quality, many sets also show scratches and abrasions on their devices and rims caused by the packaging machine used to seal coins within their Mylar® wrapping. So not only does the surface texture of these coins vary considerably, but the technical grade does as well. In fact, numerous coins in 2005 Mint Sets will not grade owing to this machine damage. Once graded, 2005 SMS coins will appear in the Mint State section of the population report rather than the Proof section as was done for 1965 - 1967 SMS coins and 1994 and 1997 Specimen coins.

Coins from 2005 Mint Sets will be eligible for two additional designations from NGC. Because the method of production more closely resembles that used for Mint State coinage, coins that display cameo devices will receive the PL, or Proof Like, designation. This is a departure from the 1965 to 1967 SMS coins which are eligible for Cameo and Ultra Cameo designations, acknowledging their similarity to proof issues. Additionally, if a coin displays especially rich satin surfaces, it may likely receive the star designation, as an indication of its superior eye appeal. While few and far between, some coins included in 2005 Mint Sets display wonderful matte surfaces, and the designation is an ideal way to highlight those coins’ special attributes.

Contact NGC Customer Service with questions about submitting 2005 Mint Sets in their original packaging to receive the SMS designation. To reach Customer Service, you may use NGC website’s contact form or call 1.800.NGC.COIN.

I called pcgs bulk deparftment earlier in the day and they had said the coins need to be submitted out of the cello for them to even get graded. Sounds like a coin toss to me!

Who cares, I do not want the designation. I have searched enough rolls as of yet to tell that the mint set coins are far better. An SMS designation is going to make the coins cheaper IMO. I do not like this. The 68's I made from rolls last year as nearly identical to the coins in the mints sets today, so any nice EDS coins from mint rolls are going to get hosed. Its easier to tell the difference between 1960's SMS coins than from the supposed 2005 SMS....arrg. Anyway I have an order in that should be done by EOD Thursday so we will see shortly the PCGS response.
  • I have run across some prooflike examples believe it or not. SMS that...

Another total screw of the whole grading system in my mind.

In that case, my best SMS quality pieces will be submitted raw. image

    Andy,

Just like always, the "best" ones won't need to be in the cello to get the designation. image

I would be surprised (not shocked, but surprised) if PCGS followed NGC' lead on this one. While some of the 2005 coins look "special", others clearly do not look any different than many of the coins graded from 2004 mint sets. Submittors simply chosing to cut out their coins from 05 mint sets can, at will, receive regular grades for the mint set coins. Hence, the separate designation becomes meaningless over time - Mint Set coins will be mixed up in both SMS and non-SMS holders. Just my 2 cents.

Instead of SMSPL, how about "MPL" for Matte Prooflike?

Of course, then we have to worry about what to call the coins that don't quite make MPL...

I think this is partially a power play as well.
By coming out and stating this, first, NGC can say that PCGS is following their lead on this. That they (NGC) is actually the leader for the TPGS.
So, if PCGS does NOT follow them on this, then we will see where the orders go...do people want SMS or not on their slabs?

PCGS is screwed if they follow NGC and will have to be powerful if they don't follow NGC.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Maybe we could call it:

    SMS-MPL-66CELLO

That has to be worth a few "Yuk"'s... *LOL*
