Chopped Trade Dollar Question ?
I've started (hopefully very carefully) picking up a few Trade Dollar, both chopped and not. In looking at the chopped Trade dollar registry sets, I noticed that several are graded in the MS range. If the theory is that they were "chopped" by Asain merchants as a mark that thay had weighed them while being used in commerce, wouldn't the highest possible grade for a chopmarked dollar be an AU58?? Just a thought. Any opinions? - P.S. - Any books or reference material on the chop marks - like what marks were which merchants? Thanks, CCG

'Uncirculated' in the context of grading is a statement of condition, not an absolute. It doesn't mean the coin hasn't circulated.
