Because it's not a real computer.

What are the requirements as far as file size etc. for Icons? Same 50k rule as posting a pic?

Just to clarify, we simply post the 10k image to the Testing Forum? Then, will it automatically become our icon or do we have to go and find it on the "Big List of Icon Thingys"?

Icon is an anagram of coin....

Is this some hidden message? Should we look for anagrams of "upload"?

    Dang Russ,
Apple invented the personal computer and most of the things we take for granted in PCs now like a graphical user interface, a mouse, "windows" (see above), track pad, hiearichical menues, etc...these all came from Apple (well, really, a couple came from the old Xerox skunkworks) and now Jobs has gone and switched to Intel for chip use in their operating system!

A well-contructed Unix-based operating system that is rock-solid compared to other (e.g Windows) operating systems, with almost zero virus activity (right now), that has an historical user- base going back to 1977, which is easy and intuitive (while being the most user friendly operating system available), will now use the same code for Intel stuff in terms of programming for software- while becoming less expensive. Steve Jobs seems to pull stuff like this out of his *** and has been (mostly) right since he and Wozniak introduced the personel computer.

Mac's are real computers. I own both a Mac and a high-end PC my son built for me (and pc games). If/when Apple pulls this one out, I'll welcome a more intelligent response to the historical, and accurate evaluation of what "real" computers are.

Macs, not 'real' computers? LOL. That's evidence of a dark age thought process in progress. Thinking like that calls into question other things a person might say or post to a coin forum image

Oh, and when your Mac breaks you can find off the shelf parts anywhere, right? image

BTW, glad you noted that Xerox actually started the whole thing - not Apple. And, while we're on the subject of the genius Steve Jobs, it was he who made the stupid decision to build Apple systems based on closed architecture. The only reason they're even still alive is because Gates bailed them out - twice. image

    Russ:

You should be kinder. After all, you must like the Apple up-grade path: If you want to up-grade some part of your computer, throw it away and buy a new one. image

Well, sorry for diverting the intent of this thread by inserting actual facts about a side-issue. Uninformed responses are normal for the Mac/pc debate and I guess they just prove again that expertise in one area doesn't justify ignorance in another. Actually, the market share for Apple computers is only about 4% right now, a proprietary operating system has hurt their market share but maintained the quality of the OS, and Xerox didn't "start the whole thing." Gates and Jobs have been friends for a long time and when Microsoft gave Apple $300 mil after Jobs returned to the company, it helped them both (Microsoft is the largest maker of Mac OS software products). Besides, where would MS get their own ideas from?

Looking forward to posting a new icon - and don't worry, it won't be a Mac!

I thought Gates bought the code from a self-employed computer geek from So Cal (this was on the PBS special "rise of the nerds")

Actually, he bought it from a company called Seattle Software (something like that - in Seattle, anyway). The deal hadn't even closed yet when he convinced IBM to use it. Best $50k ever spent.

OK, that's right!! Yeah, parlay $50k into Microsoft is one of the best investements of all time.

I think the guy from California I'm thinking about was the inventor of Visicalc. Since he did not patent it, Lotus, and later Microsoft stole it.

    Hey Russ,
Why would you need off the shelf parts if they never break to start with? I have been using Masc all my life and only had problems with one. Our imac's screen went out and it turned out that one of the connections to it had came loose. We had it repaired and while we were waiting for it to be repaired we upgraded to an emac. Both of them are working without any problems at all.image
