It was 2 years ago and at that time they owned a PF64 1913 Lib nickel. Whether a deal was attempted at that time was solely between Legend and the seller.
The article linked above indicated that the previous sale for the nickel was probably for less than $3 MILL.
Collector Ed Lee of Merrimack, N.H., bought the coin, the finest of the five known 1913 Liberty Head nickels, for nearly $3 million from California sports agent Dwight Manley two years ago. At the time, Lee joked that he would be able to retire on the nickel.
If you doubt that the finest is worth $1M [or more] extra, take a look at the original 1804's. The Childs coin sold for $4,140,000 at auction in 1999. On either side of that, two other specimens [Eliasberg and Dexter] of slightly lesser quality sold for $1,840,000.
