Will it be rare? Only time will tell. If very few are ordered, yes, it will be rare.
Most likely, if past performance is anything to go by, there will be enough ordered, that it will likely not be considered one of the lower mintages of modern commems.
However, it commorates a great organization (US Marines) and for anyone trying to put together a complete set of modern commems it is collectable.
I think that becuase of the topic, they will be popular. I might break my rule of only buying one for this issue.

Every Jar Head will buy one....500,000 seems a large mintage if I am correct so I doubt it will be rare. RJ
This former Marine will buy several...am going to send a few to others I served with (thirty years ago this year). Who knows, maybe they'll get interested in collecting!
Does anyone know more about the two commem set with the Marshall commem as well? Ie dates of availability, pricing, packaging, etc. Mint site says: "In addition to the single coin options in both proof and uncirculated condition, the Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar will also be available as part of two limited-edition collectible sets. First, a Coin & Chronicles Set will feature a Bureau of Engraving and Printing intaglio print and an informative booklet. The coin will also appear in a special set with the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar later this year. " But I can't find any further info on the set. Don
I think these will be very popular. CNN ran a story, so the awareness level will be better than typical commemoratives. I think the CNN story went into the Early Bird, a summary of news articles widely read in the US military.
Comparison to west Point is not accurate, as a very small percentage of the US Army attended West Point. Every Marine is a part of the Corps.

Mint State examples of commems are simply ugly, horrid coins, there is no reason to burden yourself with them.

I agree with Lucy. I think it will be a sellout.
