So What Coin Dealers Followed in Their Parent's Foot Steps?

foodudefoodude Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭
Put another way, what coin dealers had their sons or daughters in turn become a coin dealer?

At ANR we have Chris Karstedt, our president, and her daughter, Melissa, who runs our retail division. We have QDB and his son Andrew, who works in the retail department. We have me, working in various capacities at ANR, and my dad, Frank Van Valen, our senior numismatist.

David Lawrence's son John took over David Lawrence Rare Coins from his father after he died. He is maintaining the same high standards and ethics of his father.

Larry Stack is 3rd generation professional numismatist.

Robert W. Mangels, Jr., of Golden Eagle in MD is second generation.

Dave Thaxter of MD is also second generation.

Bob Riethe's son is a grader at PCGS.

Tim Carroll's son Ryan is a real "hotshot" at Heritage.

Wade Milas of Rarcoa is Ed's son.

Ed, Jr., John, and now Lance Hipps are following in Ed, Sr.'s fabled footsteps.

Aaron Berk is following Harlan Berk.

I am sure there are more, but these are on the quick thinking list.

Oh and of course, Dr. Donald and Judith must certainly be included in following Art Kagin.

PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

If I may comment on what Julian said above, Ed Hipp's sons are working with him, and I have had the distinct pleasure of having them wait on me at several national coin shows in recent years. Like their father, they are courteous, polite, knowledgable, and extremely helpful. If they are not careful, they are going to give numismatics a good name. What a pleasure it is to have someone wait on you who really makes you feel that they care about the customer and what the customer wants. Apparently the acorn didn't fall far from the tree.
