Slab Question

In the near future I will have the opportunity to get a certified coin autographed by the designer. I would like to know what would be the best type of pen to use for autographing a slab so the signature will remain permanent?

Probably sharpie.If I may ask what coin are you going to do this to?

The designer of the 2005 5c Buffalo obverse will be the guest speaker at my next coin club meeting and he has agreed to sign some autographs. I just purchased a PCGS PR69DCAM that I hope to get signed.

It is most likely a Sharpie. It will write on anything, does not fade, is ASTM approved, the preference of many collectors (only in black or blue), and dries rather quicky. However, it is instantly removable with alcohol (so don't try the old baseball varnish trick or you will watch it go bye-bye) and will remain ever vulnerable to scratches - the item is platic and every hairlin will go right through the ink and leave a line visible even more so as the slab is transparent. If I were to get this signed I would get a very fine point sharpie in black and have the slab signed right over the insert. I know that sounds bad - but it is the most protected area from stratches. I do not know why the coin "window" is not similarly protected, but that might cut down on reholderings

These hairlines I mentioned will be caused even by putting the slab in a polypro sleeve - the ink layer is very thin. So, this must be cared for carefully. It is "permanenet" but rather fragile. Best of luck and really consider getting the sig on the insert.

That is quite a cool thing to have happen.If I may suggest look and see if ICG has made him sign some insert labels.In the past ICG has had designers sign insert labels so that might be a more permanent solution.At least you wouldn't have to worry about those marks on his signature.

If I crackout the insert and get it signed; then return the coin and insert to PCGS would they re-holder it?

Probably not. You should buy a cheap slab of some sort to test the pen on. I agree that a Sharpie is probably your best bet. Use a fine point one.
