Mirror fields on a Peace Dollar?

I thought Peace Dollars had a "sandblasted" or satin finish?

Take a close look at the lower right field arount "Trvst"...a lot of scratches. Looks like it's been severely "brushed".

looks okay to me but with the scratches on base of the bust maybe closer to a 62-63, but
the PL in the description could just be a poor choice in terminology.
i see the normal satin finish and not the mirror fields we know to be on Morgans sometimes.

Not even remotely PL.

Maybe he is describing how the light of the photo reflects back....that doesn't make it PL/

I agree. The coin looks OK- I think the seller just got a little mixed up on his nomenclature, and was referring to the cartwheel effect of the luster.

I've only seen two PL peace dollars, and both of them were "California Prooflikes".

Actually, I think it's just a lame attempt to suggest that the coin is worth more. Take a look at sellers other auctions, half of them are advertised as PL.

This guy used to sell coins using a "file photo". He's finally got away from doing that but always advertises his coins as PL, mirror like and the such. He actually sells some higher quality coins but mostly overpriced. He's used "PL" as an abrev. for "plain" (without a mintmark) a lot as well.

Mercury or Chrome plated I believe.

As a side note, many peace dollar dates appear PL in the obv field above the head among and to the right of the rays.

It`s when a coin is whizzed and the details are artificially frosted.

What nwcs said could be true too and frosted afterwards. I can see that it could be plated.

The "california prooflikes" were a phenomenom that appeared back back in the mid 70's when PL's were first starting to attract a premium. the coins have highly polished fields and artifically frosted devices. If you don't know what they are they look AWESOME. I have an 1881-S California Prooflike dollar that has 18 inches of mirror and frosty white deep cameo devices (but the mirrors show lots of fine hairlines from the polishing, the the frost bleeds out onto the fields a little in some areas). Now imagine a Peace dollar like that! A black and white cameo with 10 inches of mirror. That is what the two peace dollars I've seen looked like. I would have bought them but the first one I saw wasn't for sale (the dealer knew what it was and didn't want it in the marketplace) and the other one the dealer DIDN'T know what it was and thought he had a wondercoin he could retire on. It was priced accordingly.
