1955-D/S Jefferson variety.

Can anyone tell me why I never see any 1955-D/S Jefferson Nickels slabbed by NGC---ANACS---SEGS with the FS designation on the insert?? My hunch is that only the coins struck with Die #1 are recognized as the D/S variety but there seems to be a boatload of ANACS examples constantly listed on eBay. Can someone post an FS designated coin or give me an answer?? Thanks.

My PCGS example was crossed from an ANACS example without the FS number. I presume ANACS only recognizes die #1.

i've seen various Die # designations, so i guess my question could also be why the proper FS # is never used? presumably, the different services have trouble identifying which Die # each coin is so they lump them together with the generic D/S. do you think that's possible??

Here is an ANACS slab with the Die #

I've seen ANACS slab coins with and without the Die # - it may be that coins submitted for
attribution will show the proper Die #, while those submitted under regular service are not.

Interestingly, I believe that the official PCGS stance is that they will only recognize Die #1,
    however I own three PCGS examples - Die #'s 1, 4 & 5 (all labeled 1955-D/S).

I had an anacs example that I sent to Ngc to cross with the FS number on it, but they sent it back saying that it was not the correct die number. Sometime later I bought another example in an anacs holder that was die number 1 and they did cross that one.

    hey Ken and Vince

you've both provided the answer that i've suspected. in a nutshell, there are several dies which struck these coins, some very subtle and the differences between a couple are negligible and sometimes tough to discern. i guess i need to find a clear Die #1 attributed coin.
