Will NCS go under...

when the coin market goes south?

A comment by TDN in a related thread got me thinking (explains the wood-burning smell image ). If shiny, unoriginal coins are shunned in the next bear market, will the producer of such coins be able to stay in business. One flip side of this argument is that sellers will need their coins in higher grade holders to get more money for them, so the demand for the conservation service could be greater than ever.

    Excuse me??? image NCS doesn't "doctor" anything, but provide a valuable service to many collectors coins that, without conserving, may very well end up worthless.

    NCS services many more coins than those of which you speak. Do you honestly believe all the shiny NCS'd gold on the marketplace was destined to be worthless unless it were to be conserved? image

    Where's dorkkarl when I need him?

    They are irreversibly altering the coins' surfaces/appearance to increase its value. Whether it's a shipwreck coin or removing carbon spots, that's doctoring. Filling defects or holes is also doctoring. It's just a matter of degree.

    But removing PVC and the like can actually preserve a coin that WOULD be ruined if left alone. I think NCS does all kinds, good and bad.

    I think there's a huge misconception out there that is being perpetraded by NCS's detractors that all coins that go through the service magically get upgraded. For the record, I've sent them 5 coins now and 2 have downgraded by having blemishes uncovered, while three have stayed at the same grade. I think that upgrades due to coins having been conserved are actually a lot more uncommon than people believe.

    Students of animal behavior have proven that a reward event happening every time [upgrade?] actually can reduce the desired behavior [payment of fee?]. As long as the reward event happens often enough to be associated with the action, then the reinforcement is strong. image

    Interesting analogy. FWIW, I have never sent them a coin with the intended outcome to be an upgrade, just an upgrade in the eye appeal dept. In each case, I did get what I wanted.

    Robertpr - Just curious - were either of the downgraded coins originally in NGC holders? If so wouldn't NGC be liable under their guarantee for the resulting loss in value that followed NCS's conservation?

    I think they will still be around, although with a lot less submissions. During the bear market it will be hard enough to sell coins, and I don't think there will be any great demand to take currently substandard coins and then incurring additional costs to get them conserved. When the market turns back, then there will be more NCS submissions once demand picks up. Just my opinion.
