VAM help please. 1878 P 7 TF Long Nock

I thought I knew the 1878 P VAMs.

This coin has doubled nostril. Strong doubling on E, PLUB. Stars doubled left and right. Take a look at the spike on the first 8 of the date, I haven't seen this one before.

This is the 7 TF long nock reverse. The reverse is pretty standard no obvious defects present. Suggestions?

Look at the bottom of the nostril, and at the E

quick guess vam 83 will look into it further

editted to addvam 83 - II/I 11 18 doubled at top right with 1 set high

I agree the description is close in the book but the photo in the book of the 8 looks nothing like this coin, nor does the book mention the obvious doubled nostril. I thought about 83 and decided probably not.

I have the new attribution guide for 7tf from Leroy and the picture matches perfectly so does description. after reading it I say vam 83

sorry do not have a scanner so cannot show the pic. it even describes the slight doubling to the right of the bottom of the left serif of the seven

only other choice is 79 but i think the 18 brings it to 83. my 7tf also has overpolished nose but it has nothing to do with its vam #

Thanks appreciate the information; I was going on the photo in the book. My coin's first 8 is a lot different from the 4th edition. Vam 83 it is.

Leroy's new 7tf attribution guide is well worth the 10. + 2. shipping was finally able to identify mine as 114 with the updated descriptions and pics.

I agree with dwssws that your coin is a VAM 83.

I just received Leroy Van Allen's 1878 P 7 TF Attribution Guide (as well as some other literature) and the photos in the update and yours are spitting images of each other in regards to the "18" in the date. The strong doubling in LIBERTY is also apparent in the decription for coins having the II/I reimpressed die obverse.

The 7TF Attribution guide and the March 2005 updates beyond the VAM Encyclopedia are well worth the money!!

Definitely VAM 83. Interesting that the lump on top of the 8 isn't in the VAMs 30-84 attribution guide that Jeff Oxman put out in a short run a few years ago. If the picture in the book is correct, you'd think Leroy would call the one with the lump VAM 83A.
