Came across a interesting article tonight regarding contact dermatitis and nickel. It apparently was a factor in the European Union deselcting nickel for many of it's denominations.

All metals are at least a little poisonous though many are required in small concentrations.
Iron is needed in more substantial amounts.
Almost anything can cause an allergic reaction to skin but generally metals are nearly inert
in this regard. Much of the reson is that they are hard enough that very little will actually
get on a user of coins. Coins coming out of counting machines or production facilities will
have much more powdered metal adhering to them.
I've never heard of anyone complain about problems with nickel but perhaps I would if I
worked in a counting house or the mint.
