NT vs. AT ??

Attached pics show the reverses of a couple late-date D-mint Washington 25c ( 2 pics of each 25c). In your opinion, are these coins naturally toned or artificially toned ?? Two answers are required. I will post obverse pics and answers later.

Ummm...just guessing. I think both are AT, but not blantantly so. The reason I think so is because you asked and implied that you know the answer for sure.

Also, I've seen vaguely similar uneven looking light toning that occurred accidently a while back when I did an electrolytic cleaning experiment using aluminum foil and baking soda to clean dirty pocket change. I was doing it just to see what such coins looked like. Only I left a little pile of coins in overnight and some of the coins near the bottom had a similar look to your coins.

I'd need a better picture of the lettering on other areas of relief to tell heat, etc from sulfide vapor over a long time. What's the dates? Also all sorts of odd chemicals can lightly tone coins--you need a tight closeup to give a good guess.

Both are NT - I know because they are from a toning project begun in 1990 : white coins from rolls stored in kraft envelopes at room temperature and humidity.
All such coins I have sent to PCGS from this experiment, maybe 40-50 have been judged NT. The two depicted in thi sthread have vivid reverse toning which could be mistaken for AT. I show the pictures here because I have had coins with this kind of toning BB'd by both PCGS and NGC in the past. The obverses of the coins, a 1961-D and a 1962-D are shown below.

One more coin from same batch. This is a 1961 25c- the obverse color is reminiscent of the color on the finest 1951-S mint set 25c. Unfortunately, the reverse is not pretty, butI'm hoping it will improve with age.

Sure doesn't look like any kraft envelope toning I've ever seen, and I agree with PCGS/NGC on bagging coins that look like those.

Under high enough magnification PCGS should be able to tell long term toning from heat coloration due to a number of really obvious differences. By the way, after sending PCGS a Morgan in a manila envelope for 30 years-- I had to dip the coin after getting "questionable color" back twice. The dipped piece of garbage came back MS-66 finally. I don't think that some younger graders have a clue what to look for, even though it's obvious with magnification to anyone who's stored coins since the 1950's out of mint bags in paper, tissue or envelopes.
