ANACS show verbals vs. the Actual grades

Has anyone else had really mixed results of what is said verbally about a coin at a show from ANACS versus what it comes back as, after they officially graded it? Out of a 10 coin submission at Central States, only 1 came back the same as the verbal!

Some of the bigger differences:

V=Verbal, A=Actual

V=MS63, A=MS60
V=AU58, A=MS60
V=AU58, A=MS62
V=MS62, A=MS60

Two of the coins they said were NOT cleaned at the show are coming back NET grade based on cleaning!

These were all 1921 Peace dollars.

And which do you feel are correct ... those "actual" grades where they had the customary lighting and tools of the trade and where they back the grade up with real money or the "verbal" grades that are free and without guarantee?

Maybe there is a reason others don't offer their opinions as ANACS does.

There is a difference, but I think this is a great service none the less.

I only submitted to them once, and got the impression they were trying to be pretty conservative when they gave opinions at the show.

I showed 4 of the 10 I was submitting, and this is how they came out:

1) 1879S Morgan
Verbal: Maybe MS-65
Actual: MS-65

2) 1881 Morgan
Verbal: MS-64, shot at 65
Actual: MS-64

3) 1896O Morgan
Verbal: AU-53 or so?
Actual: AU-58

4) 1875S 20-cent
Verbal: AU, net XF
Actual: AU, net XF

So, I had no complaint about their verbals, but different day and different conditions mean different results?

My biggest difference was with a 1873-CC dime.

Verbal = VF20

Actual = Counterfeit!

It might have something to do with the fact that they usually only have the one guy looking at stuff for free and also that there is usually a huge line full of inconsiderate people with literally boxes of stuff to get free opinions on, with other people mixed in the line with a few pieces to view.

I don't think I'd complain about a free service.

I had the same experience some time ago. I am sort of surprised at the discrepancy on the Peace dollars, considering that's the specialty of Eric Justice (the grader I saw at the CSNS show). I'll guess he missed the cleaning on the ones that he said were MS63 and 62.

Now the way yer SUPPOSED to chisel the free appraisal is with a CAMCORDER.

You ask for the free grade and while he's talking, you pan to the coin and never get it slabbed cuz you got all you need. It's best to limit this to no more than 3 stockboxes.

Opinions vs reality. Just goes to show you how different people view coins. I've submitted coins to PCGS just to see how they grade them and about 2/3 of the time they come back the same grade that they were before I cracked them out......

I submitted one coin to ANACS at the show and that was becuase thier verbal opinion was dead on with my assesment. In fact intrestingly it was a very nice white and flashy Ms-63 1921 Peace$. I had it in the showcase for sale raw in St Louis with a price of 225.00 with not a single intrested person. So, before I left, I took it over to the ANACS table for a verbal opinion and both Michael Fahey and the younger new guy (sorry on the name) agreed it was a lock 63, so I submitted it on the spot. I got it back yesterday Holdered Ms-63 as they stated, and the coin looks damn good in the holder. Should be an easy sell over on the bay!!!

Goose3 nailed it---hard to complain about a free service. And we all know that grading is subjective. If most of us were given the same coin 4-5 times, we'd have at least two different grades.

Show lights can be an issue. I've cherrypicked a few '65' coins at shows that turned into 63's back home under Reveal bulbs. It happens.
