What numismatic darkside collections do you have?

291fifth291fifth Posts: 25,233 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have long suspected that most collectors of US coins also have an interest in darkside numismatic material. What darkside numismatic material do you collect?

I'll start:

1. Ancient Roman coins. I originally collected this series back in the 1980's but sold the collection in 1988. I revived the collection about a year ago and am glad I did. I love being able to add near-mint state coins from the 3rd century for well under $100.

2. Coins and tokens issued by or relating to numismatic publishers such as COIN WORLD, KRAUSE/NUMISMATIC NEWS, WHITMAN. I've been working on this collection for nearly 20 years and have more than 250 different medals/tokens. While my Krause and Whitman collections are nearly complete I still need a surprising number of the COIN WORLD medals/tokens from before 1980. (I added one COIN WORLD medal, a 1969 bronze Philadelphia Mint piece, as a result of an eBay auction last night. If anyone needs info on numismatic published tokens and medals I'll be happy to answer questions.

All glory is fleeting.

I have a box or so of roman and foreign coins. I like darkside stuff but don't pursue it with as much vigor as lightside.

I only have 2 darkside coins in my type set, both modern MS-69 PCGS Silver Brittanias that I got from a board member. I got them because I really like the designs.

Lots of Darkside ... Working on several Type Sets including Canada, British Victorian, Australia and New Zealand; also British Conder Tokens, world coins and medals with nice ships on 'em, and a "general" Darkside collection (accumulation, really) of coins with designs I like.

I just started collecting the darkside. I started my collection with a 15 lot win of the Eliasberg World Gold Auction. Before this the only darkside coin I had purchased was the 2004 25th Anniversary Canadian NGC MS 70 Gold $50 Maple Leaf. I should get my coins from ANR today infact so I am kind of anxious today.Eliasberg Auction Wins

Hello all! I've been collecting U.S. coins for a few years. I work in a call center with about 300 other people and in talking with them (I know pretty much all of them) they have found out about my hobby. Frequently people will bring a coin or two to show me because it's old or they've never seen one before and once in a while I buy them. Over a few years of this going on I've gained a lot of junk silver, two really nice U.S. coins and a jar full of miscellaneous foreign coins. The large majority of these foreign coins are from the United Kingdom and easily identified, but some are completely undecipherable to me.

Last weekend I attended my first coin show near Pittsburgh, PA. While milling about the bourse I came across a dealer who had but one small case on his table with maybe a dozen graded large cents in it. Nobody was anywhere near him and I had some questions, so we had a conversation. We talked for about 45 minutes with no interruption. Nobody was even looking at his table. When I decided to move along I felt it appropriate to buy something from him to compensate him for his time, but I wasn't about to drop $100 or more. Beside his lonely presentation case was a plastic bin labled "7 for $1.00" I grabbed a big ol' handfull of I didn't know what, gave him $5 and thanked him for his time. I chucked the loose coins in my bag and promptly forgot about them - until now.

First of all, I can't identify most of them. That fact alone will certainly drive me crazy. Would you all be so kind as to recommend a resource book or possibly a website to assist me in that task?

Secondly, the bug has bitten. I want more. I don't see myself spending tons of cash on these so-called "darkside" coins due to my dedication to my selected U.S. series, but they definitely appeal to me. The grand idea of a coin from every nation occurs to me and seems it could actually be accomplished without breaking the bank. Does anybody happen to have a small cache of random non-U.S. coins they'd be willing to part with for cheap? Grade isn't a concern, I just want one from as many countries as possible. I know this question would be more suited for the buy, sell, trade forum, but that place is almost strictly U.S. and always slabbed. Forgive me for being slightly off topic.

Thank you all in advance. I shall continue to lurk here as I have been for a time. Should the day come that I have something of value to contribute you will hear from me again.

I started collecting coins in the 60's while living near Detroit and have always been familiar
with Canadian stuff. I started a set of Canadian dimes, 1858-now, when I realized how cheap
they are in relation to US silver coins. I'm also working on a Canadian type set of each denomination and
    monarch.

Very nice coins and the Goetz medal, Darkhorse! I've been thinking about collecting nice 19th century German coins... I have a few 19th and early 20th century coins, but most are circulated. I have one Goetz medal; the Lusitania (probably the most ubiquitous one). Someday I may shell out the $$$ to buy the Kienast book of Goetz medals.

    P. S. Who's the poster on the OF who posts the great pictures of Goetz medals?

Krause. It's also known as the telephone book or the Standard Catalog of World Coins.

It will take some time to get good at identifying these but it's surprising how easy it is to
remember the better dates and silver and gold contents of these coins. The tougher ones
are the Arabic coins and these take years because of the language barrier. Chinese coins
are also tough because there are so many and they are so similar.

You'll need the 1800 or 1700 to date one to get started and these aren't printed anymore.
Unless you just want to buy one of each the best bet is to get the hardcover '86 or '94? ed-
ition and a brand new 1900 to date. Or find a few year old one and the 1900 to date.

Read the front of it and will will make them easier to learn.

I collect most coins, tokens, and medals and also collect the numismatic publisher medals.
Some of my favorite coins are darkside moderns. These coins were in many cases even more
ignored than the US moderns but they were often melted after years of use. There still aren't
a lot of collectors for these but prices are jumping on lots of them.

I have a complete (so far) collection of Canadian and Austrailian Hologram coins.
These are some of the most beautiful coins in the world. IMHO
The Silver and Gold Maple Leaf Holograms are spectacular.

I sort of like Russian gold, and to a lesser degree, Mexican gold coins.

That's about as far as I will go on the dark side. Anything beyond that is just flat sick...

I have a couple pounds of unsorted world currency that I got back in the 60's and 70's when travelling. My eventual goal is to go through it, pick out some of the nicer unique pieces and put them in an albulm for my kids to enjoy. None of the coins are really worth much money, but they are interesting I think and I like looking at them.
