Car Wash

There is a car wash just up the street from me, and I was wondering if it might be worth my time to ask the guy to let me look through his quarters? I would split anything of value I found with him. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck doing something like this???

Perhaps you should buy rolls from the bank for face value, and then anything you find of value would be yours to keep in whole. And, you might have better luck searching rolls of half dollars (for the 90% and 40% silver ones) for your time...unless you really have a thing for clad Washingtons.

There was someone on these forums that mentioned that he operates a coin-op car wash and averages at least one silver quarter a month. Might be worth a shot.

In this case he is search through his own coins. I think most car wash owners would be a little nervous having a stranger search through their money unsupervised. Getting coin rolls from the bank makes more sense.

I owned a self service car wash from 1985 to 1998. (What a nightmare) Mostly you are recycling your quarters. You take them from the vaults and dump them in your change machine. I would average having to roll and take to the bank around $300 a week and would average finding a silver quarter every couple of months. Probably not worth your time and won't excite the car wash owner.

I'm the car wash owner who averages a silver quarter a month (except lately). They come in bunches like someone cleans out an old drawer or something. Last silver I got was actually a dime in a product vendor about 2 months ago.

I agree with CCGold - it would not be worth your time. I can hear a silver quarter a mile away when I'm emptying the vaults. I do occasionally find interesting quarters, but I go through a LOT of quarters and yes many just keep going around and around from changers to vaults and back. Sometimes I get tired of seeing the same quarter and purposely pull it out to take to the bank!

    Still looking for Wisconsin errors!

Hey MoneyCollector, I'll tell you my best car wash story. I walk up to a guy in a bay that's blowing the inside of a 73 Mercury out. Magets (little white wormy things) are just flying everywhere and the smell is unbearable. When I asked him what he was doing, He replied " Well, my Dad died in the car and the police didn't find him for a week and I need to clean the inside out." He then sat down in the car and drove off. YUCK!!
