Question on Festival of Britain Crown

These crowns in the red and green boxes are just BU and not proof correct? I see many on the bay of E where the seller is claiming they are proof but they don't look proof to me.

    I believe all 1951 Festival of Britain crowns are considered proof (both red and green boxes). Somebody more knowledgeable should be right along to confirm or correct my post.

    edited to add: From Tony Clayton's web site - "A crown was issued to celebrate the Festival of Britain in 1951, and was only available in a proof version. Not only was this the first cupro-nickel crown, but the design had the legend FIVE SHILLINGS on the obverse for the first time (previous crowns had either no value or the value CROWN). Pistrucci's St.George and the Dragon was used for the reverse. A coinage press was set up at the Festival of Britain demonstrating the production of these crowns, but no mark was used to distinguish them from those struck at the Mint."

    I just acquired a red and green box this past week and am putting one up on eBay this weekend. I don't really see any difference between the two, and they look prooflike to me, although they are very beautiful in their boxes, whether P/L or Proof. image

    The F.O.B. crowns in the boxes are not considered true proofs - they are "proof-like." There are some frosty VIP proofs out there, but they are rare and will go for $500-$800. Beware: lots of dealers think they have one of those - they don't.
