Can you buy coins at the post office and is this recommeneded?

I've heard a few people talk about getting coins at the post office.....are they just getting certain denominations or can you get any coins at the post office and if so, why do people get them there VS the bank?

Thanks image

I think they are referring to picking up orders at the PO not actually buying coins there. To my knowledge the only thing the Post Office does is lose I mean ship mail! image

Actually, I do believe that they sell statehood quarters. They may be together with a stamp.

With that said, I don't think this is what anybody is referring to.

Yeah ... joint venture with the mint ... first day of issue cover with statehood quarter and a "Greetings from America" stamp. Post office is supposed to do half the sales and the mint the other half.

I'm pretty sure you can get Sacs if you buy stamps at the machines at the PO. Circulated Sacs are kind of a modern rarity image

My PO gives Sacs and SBA's in it's vending machine. Get them there all the time.

Actually my local PO sells the statehood quarters without the first day covers, in rolls or in sets, if you buy a year set they come in some goofy lookin' holder. They also sell phone cards, sports plaques, beanie babies, and other assorted junk. None of which I would touch with a ten foot pole image

And for those that actually want dollar coins, you will get them from the stamp vending machines. Both SBAs and SACs. But I don't know if that's what you meant by buying coins at the post office.

What LanLord said. The post office stamp vending machines give SBA and Sac dollars as change. Just feed 'em five or ten bucks and then buy a cheap item like a single stamp. Cha-ching. Dollar coins in the change slot. This is the one place they regularly circulate.

(BTW, I found a 2000 Sac dollar with my detector the other day. That was a bit of a surprise. My first dug dollar!)

I just purchased an unc bank roll of Minn-P qtrs yesterday at the P.O. - this is the 2nd time I've been able to do it - but I know the guy pretty well. Struck out on all the nickels, though! I have mentioned getting an MS67 Mich-P in change from the p.o. (I had to submit it, it didn't come certified...) but they seem to get new coinage just as often as the banks, and are a less utilized source, so sometimes are more likely to have new rolls. After all, they have to have change for all those money orders for eBayers! But it probably depends on who the clerk is - I have run into some that I wouldn't ask for the time of day!!
