Yep, they’re closing my base, and moving the whole ball ‘o wax up the coast.
The beauty is, it’s saving the government $400,000 over a 20 year span. That’s $20,000 per year!
To commemorate the event, the incredible savings(!!), and just to make me feel better, I’d like to request a Pic-Post of your most beautiful coins. With each post, indicate the current retail value of the coin. When we get to $20,000, we will all see just how IMPRESSIVE that number really is.
(Pardon the sarcasm.)
I’ll start us off with a measly $425 coin (PCGS price guide, retail):
1916 Mercury Dime, MS-66FB

Thank you, Russ, for your kind donation.
Current "Save Tommy's Base" tally: $1425

pcgs price guide 12500

I'm sure there are collectors here that could "buy" that savings for quite a few years to come, with just a few of thier coins.
Current tally: $17,000
(Now, if I can just find some of those Govt. acquisition system toilet seats, we'd be over the top!)

<< <i>Quit whining. Connecticut is taking in the shorts big time -- loss of a huge Sub Base and 8,000 jobs. I guess they can find a place for all those subs down in Norfolk!!

Oh, I know. But the personal hit is always bigger than the biggest impersonal hit.
To be honest, I fully expected it since we were about the last base dropped from the last BRAC.
It still shocked me that their estimated savings was so piddly. The boys at work figure if we each pitch in $1 from each paycheck, we'll more than cover the "savings".
892 jobs X $1 per check X 26 pay periods per year = $23,192.
Cover the savings, and have enough left over to have a nice party.

No, no, no! Kennedy Halves are modern junk, and you should simply ignore them - please!

Yeah, I think most in CT knew this was coming anyway. Unemployment in the area is low, so they will probably recover in a reasonable amount of time. Many communities have found creative ways to use closed bases and have ended up even better off than before the bases closed!
They could actually come out way ahead if they canned a few politicians instead!!
By the way...what states voted Democratic this past election? I believe Conneticutt was one of them.
Oh and to keep this response "On thread", I wouldn't give a plugged nickel for the BRAC commission or the Government push to Privatization.

Yes, that's why I said it sucked to live in a Blue State.
Depending on Chris Dodd to save your Sub Base does not give one much hope.
Quite the big day!! This, and the first execution in New England in 45 years!!

<< <i>Ask Chris Dodd how much he has accepted so far in "free stuff" (breakfasts/lunches/dinners/trips/MontBlanc pens/ties/limo's etc etc etc) so far this year and you would have been able to keep that base open for a few years to come---all this on his "freebies" from just the first 5 months of this year--- So freakin sad.....

Yeah, while he blocks Bush's judicial nominees. Thanks, Chris!!
<< <i>Russ are you telling me that I should not look at all the sealed proof sets that I have sitting in a box and never looked at (approx. 100 from 54 - 64) >>
No, that would be far too much of a hassle for you. You should instead sell them to me at 5% back of bid.
Russ, NCNE
somewhere between $3000. and $5000. IMO

But you could have a new customer . . .
No I don't think i would be a customer for Russ, Morgans and Vams are mostly where my interests are at these days.
myCCset
<< <i>Even if I opened them I wouldn't know what I was looking at unless I went back thru threads looking at Russ's pics and seeing if i had anything even close (have a hard enough time with Morgans). I don't even know why i bought them ( must have been bored and needed something to do). I have two boxes (used to house 17 inch monitors) filled with proof, mint, prestige, premier, silver sets and some oddball stuff I have bought over the years. I guess maybe someday I'll have to either go thru them or do something with them. >>
