1968 or 1969 Topps ?

I have been kicking around the idea of starting another set besides the one I am already working on (1978 Topps). Have whittled my choices down to 1968 and 1969 Topps. I was born in 1969 so the interest is there. BUT I like the 68's better visually. Any feedback would be appreciated!

By the way, I hope this would not ruin my rep of collecting garbage image

I'd go with the 1969 set.

Very clean lines, nice big photos, minimal intrusion from the graphics on the card.

1969. I never liked the difference in the "burlap" border the 68's had with the first series being more of an open brown and white and the rest of the series being more tighter knit, almost like a wood grain. Plus you cant go wrong with Mantles last official Topps card......

I *love* the photography on the '69 set, so that'd be my choice. The '68 set has it's plusses, including some really nice All-Star cards. You really can't go wrong, of course, but I'd go with the 1969 set if I were you. Either way, have fun! (my guess is that you won't be busting as much wax as you have for your 1978 set, huh?)

keep the feedback coming! Thanks guys!

ajw ..... hell no, I won't be busting ANY wax my friend ... What can I say, the 78's have me by the balls ..... unopened is still readily available if you want to spend the money. NOT THE CASE (no pun intended image) with the 68's and 69's ......

  • I agree with the others that 1969 would be best. Nice looking 2nd year cards of Bench & Ryan in the 69 set; also has Micks last card and the Reggie rookie.

Soft - I am working on the 1968 set now, you'll have a lot of company with that set if you choose it. Obviously, the 1968 set is home to the rookie cards of Ryan and Bench, and it is chock full of early HOF's cards like Seaver, Carew, Palmer etc. I think someone here posted the stats regarding highest percentage of cards in a set being HOF members, and the 1968 set was at the top of the list. Whichever you choose, you'll be picking a nice set (and a change of pace from 1978).

  • I like them both, but I think the '69 set is nicer although it will probably cost more especially if you want the variations - most notably the "white letter" mantle.

69 will certainly cost you more $$$ to put together.

I love the orange background and the set is very challenging to complete...

    Softparade,

There is a nice lot of 120 PSA 9s 1978s for sale on Ebay, not sure how close you are to your set, but thought I would pass it on.

Stingray, I saw that lot and thanks for the heads up. More than half of those cards I have in my set already. So no interest here.

Those white letter variations with the 69's I know will be tough. Anybody have that Mantle to start me off on the right foot? image Really I am not sure what to do yet. Thanks for the feedback all!

    1968 because:
    1) It's the year I was born so I am working on that set (slowly);
    and
    2) It goes well with your '78 set. Then go for '58 next!

    Good luck whatever you do!

    1956 or 1957

i was an 8 year old egg and i wasnt even a sperm yet!!

    BBBBBBBUUUUUUUUUWHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 69 has variations..and thus is a bit harder and more expensive to collect.

in my opinion, the 69 has a better design...it's a shame that ryan's rookie had to be that year and not in either 67 or 69.

the 69 has mantle's last year (along with the ever tough variation).

the 69 has the ever popular reggie jackson rookie.

but, 68 has the ryan and bench rookies...which is always a draw.
