PCGS price guide

How is this guide compiled? It sure looks like it really has some inflated prices on there. Is there anything else that gives a more accurate cost of what you would expect to buy/sell a coin for? I have read PCGS's explanation, but these cannot be averages.

They call up 10 major dealers each week and ask the following question:

"In your wildest dreams, and assuming a rich buyer who knew nothing about coins came along, how much would you like to get for it?"

Then they average the responses.

I think that its much better than it much better than it used to be, but it still needs to be adjusted both up and down.

Ok don't know if that's sarcasm, but I would like to know for sure if that's the coins that they buy their coins?

I agree that their price guide is useless...It's a "miss" for them. If they had accurate bid - ask - retail price comparisons they could bring millions more hits to their website.

Check the prices realized on Heritage, Teletrade And ebay. I have seen dealers prices on their websites rise dramatically based on ebay auctions within a 24 hour peroid.

The price guide works in a "relative" way. As you can see, some coins are worth more than others (MS66 is worth more than MS65, 1909-S is worth more than 1909, etc).

From an "absolute" standpoint, you may as well use the Red Book.

I agree, early RD lincolns for instance.

In the broad look i would say they are too high..in the highest grade and the hardest to find they seem low by a lot in some cases to me..

How can anyone make an accurate price guide at anytime? You ask each of us what a specific coin is worth and you will get different answers. Forget if we are talking retail or wholesale or bid or ask. There just is NO right answer. So let's not get upset at the CU price guide. The one improvement I asked DH to make a year ago and he wouldn't even comment is to put in two numbers for each coin. One number would represent what a dealer who wants the coin would pay for it and the other would represent the lowest price the dealer would sell the coin for in that grade. Then, at least the potential buyer would have a range to ponder instead of an absolute number which nobody can agree about. JMHO. Steve
