Ebay feedback...just how important?

VetterVetter Posts: 976 ✭✭✭✭✭
When bidding on ebay, just how important is the sellers feedback? Will you bid more with a higher number then a low one? Or do you not care so much, but rely on the picture and descripition. How about you seller. Do you think your feedback has an impact on the prices realized? Just how high is your feedback?

Feedback is very important since in many auctions this is the only way you have to assess the seller.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

  • I wouldn't bid on an item unless the seller had at least 20 pos. feedbacks. They have to show they know how to address a package and make it to the post office. A seller accepting PayPal increases confidence level as there is recourse thru PayPal or the CC company. A neg or 2 mixed in will not allways put me off the seller . I read the comments. I do not think I would bid large on an overseas seller. There again unless they are very established.

I have a mere 500 or so feedback @ 100% thus far. At one time, I used to be very SELF-CONSCIOUS about feedback. Not any more! If I do something that's worthy of a neg., GIVE IT TO ME. If not, and some buttcrunch decides to neg me before emailing me to straighten out whatever it is that pisses'em off; oh well, I guess I'll have to live with it. I've conducted sound business transactions as both buyer and seller. Why, with all the numbskulls getting away with what they do as scammers, I doubt eBay will throw up roadblocks to screw me and my measly transactions.image As far as business transactions and those who choose to partake in them; I believe it has to do with pics, wording, colors (for attraction purposes) and, of course, feedback #s. I do my best to stear clear of overseas auctions.

I think it is also important to take a look at even the positive feedback of the seeler if you can. Up front it might look like a seller has done 100 transactions all with postive feedback but if it is not private, they might have 20 feedbacks each from 5 different 'buyers'. I steer clear of these until they get a larger number of buyers/positive fededback.

I think a good feedback record is very important as well as the number of years the seller has been an e-bay member.

On an expensive coin. I look for several hundred feedback, with 99.5 rating. I know I will not have any problems with this seller. I have and will buy from sellers with lesser feedback, but cutback a bit on my high bid.

99.5% seems like a good point to start from, though I don't start assessing "questionable" status unless a seller is under 99%.
It also helps to see if there are recent negs indicating the seller is going bad. It is not unusual for someone to pad numbers and then go for scams until tossed out. If the FB is questionable I won't consider bidding.

  • This is my policy...I read several positive feedbacks first...too many times we look at "ONLY" neg feedbacks...this is not fair IMHO. Balance your decision to bid on a seller by not being bias and only looking at negative feedback...(BTW my username is mjhoffpauir on EBay and i have a perfect record...gotch ya!!). But yes is the answer to your question on whether feedback is important..but remember it is not everything...if you look at nothing but feedback and forget about the coin then you have lost sight of the hobby...JMHO...take care

I pay close attention to feedback too few (say less then 20) will raise an eyebrow.Neg feedback is always a concern but if there is a 99% positive record i'll read the negs and see what they are for, sometimes they may be undeserved and left by unreasonable people or revenge for feedback left to them. Also they can be very entertaining.

  • As a buyer, I do check feedback, but, I don't consider it as important as I once did. I realize that there are bad guys out there who do not hesitate to give a negative. I have one negative and it's because I left a negative because the seller failed to deliver after several requests.

However, if I have questions I do read the comments and especially the replies. I try to read through the anger in the replies and see how valid the negative is.

It just isn't as important to me as it once was.

Feedback is important for obvious reasons. But don't just look at the percentage to gauge good or bad. My Feedback is 98.7% I had one Negative when I first opened my eBay account. I gave a seller a Neutral for what I thought was slow shipping at the time. It wasn't, but I didn't know any better. The seller has a very bad feedback history. I don't sell much but when I do I do it right. Never had a dissatisfied customer. So I appreciate it when buyers do look at the sellers history not just the percentage #.

I look at the postives and how many neg's a user has. If your on Ebay long enough you'll get a jerk giving you a neg feedback. What I've been keying on more often is how long have they've been a member. Some of these folks sell stuff for a buck and have huge feedbacks but little time on Ebay, you know pump and dump the big $$$ stuff at the end. I've got some good deals on coins from people that's been around 3 or 4 years but little feedback.
