Wow. Some nice coins there! I hope they are all recovered and the perpetrator hung from her fingernails.

Could have stolen my last submission as a whole and it wouldn't even be worth what the 38-D Buffalo is!

What's the deal with the 38 Buffalo? There's one MS66 in an NGC slab on ebay that has been going for almost 10 days now with a buy it now of $65, and not a single bid yet.

I've heard this weak argument before.

A bullet will be through the intruders head before he can even get a chance to hold a family member hostage. A dog and burgler system will tip me off long before he ever gets through a window or door.

You're one of the very few, me thinks, Summit.

But back on topic, I will do my part keeping an eye out for these coins on Ebay anyway. I tend to surf there A LOT.

Thieves like this just piss me off.

That's what peepholes were invented for. If I do not know the person that I see through the peephole, then I actually don't even answer the door.

I've answered my door on more than a few occasions with a weapon in my hand. I put my family's safty at the for-front of my door answering procedure.

Turning into an open forum on gun laws??? Wouldn't it be nice if we all didnt have to lock our doors??? I usually dont, but I will tell you this - take whatever you want. The valuable stuff is no where NEAR MY HOUSE. Why would it be? Construction workers around updating houses, building new ones. Our house is so busy with friends and kids, late at night stuff going on...crooks wouldnt know WHEN we were home or not!! And friends? Trust no one. Coins should NEVER be laying around the house, unless you want them taken.

And a safe in the house? That one is funny to me. "Here you go, all my valuables are RIGHT HERE!!!"
You can always spend time at the bank looking at them....

Who wants to spend time at a BANK to look at their coins???? No way. Talk about sucking the fun out of the hobby. I might understand keeping extremely expensive coins in a bank but....heh

There are plenty of LARGE safes that you can purchase that robbers could NEVER move. House alarms combined with a "real" safe is going to protect your valuables.

I can't imagine having to drive to a bank to spend a few minutes with a coin. You might as well lock them up in jail where you can have visiting hours. image

went to an international antique show on sat in the windy city. Just one booth had coins. However I did purchase a 1862 barometer, dealer was from England. I forgot my check book, so dealer says "send me the money." let's me walk out with barometer, owing him $700. How many coin dealers would do that to someone they NEVER saw before? Too many Americans cheat, lie, steal. Here's to the honest, hardworking people that earned what they got!image

Wow that is an amazing story. I collect old barometers image - being a weather fanatic. That is awesome that he let you do that. I am always thrilled when someone does something like that. It shows that there are still people out there that are good and trusting. Cool story. Send me a pic of the barometer if you get a chance image PM image

Getting back to Carols thread, this burglary occurred in the city of Las Vegas (my home) in the state of Nevada (for those of you that asked).

The first thing I did was go online for back issues of our local paper hoping to find if there was a article of this theft but had no luck. So I called one of the reporters that handles crime. He also was unaware of it but admitted that there are two other people that handle crime in the city for the paper and it may have been thru one of them. He said he might get to finding further info for me to post, but to call back in a few days.

So I called the LVPD assuming a crime report had been written up and someone there would be able to give me follow-up info for me to post here. Well, I was transferred to a Detective who was away from the phone. I left a message asking for further info on this crime as it becomes available. Hopefully, he'll get back to me and I'll have something to add to this thread.

The problem I hope I don't run into is that I'm sticking my nose in a crime and might, might be questioned as to my motives. Hopefully, I'll be able to do this over the phone without having to go or do anything special or get a knock on my door!

P.S. I did come across this article in our paper from last week.

Ok...here's the scoop from the detective that handled the case.

The owners do not want media coverage of this burglary and the coin collection in particular. Therefore, he was reluctant to give further details. He did say there was evidence left at the scene that they are persuing, the coins listed was the majority of what was there, and the owners aren't even sure if they have insurance on them! He indicated that there are no pictures of the coins themselves, either prints or on CD.

He also stated that thinking like a thief, they will probably melt down all the coins for their silver/gold and sell as bullion.

I did a quick addition of the approx. value for these coins and the total is well in excess of $100k. It would be a terrible loss to think that they may end up as jewelry somewhere down the line!

    Relative to STOLEN coins

What you may not have considered.

Remember, most dealers get ID when they buy coins. Although many states do not require a "holding period" on coins as they do on jewelry, it will STILL usually lead cops to the thief and ....maybe.... a return of your coins. And most states do not allow sales by minors. (I made kids bring parents if they wanted to sell. And if the PARENTS wished to......they could give me WRITTEN permission to buy)

The cops CHECK dealers. They send people in without ID to .....SEE..... if the dealer will buy with no record. Only a FOOL will.

If you have nice coins, have insurance and photos of each and every coin. Everybody has a picture of their dog stuck to a telephone pole when its lost, but no one ever takes the time or expense to pictorially catalogue their collection.

Pardon my ignorance but wouldn't selling raw gold and silver present its own set of questions? It takes special equipment to handle hot metals not to mention the purity factor!

I guess what I am asking is this: Are there really people out there that take their old gold and silver and actually melt it before trying to sell it? image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

About the safes, I'd reccomend a safe built into the foundation of your house that comes thorugh the floor as a burgular would need a jackhammer or somthing to break it free.

You make a good point. But someone can use every last one of my coins in a candy machine before I'd let them take my dog.
