Toned Morgan Photography Contest!

A fellow board member came up with this idea, and I think it's great! We've had contests before, but it's hard to compare photos when they are of different coins. This board member has provided a really stunning 1880-S NGC MS64 Morgan for board members to photograph. Here's how it will work:

For those that want to participate, I need a PM from you by 9AM Monday, May 2. I will need your mailing address to draw up an itinerary for the coin. Each participant will receive the coin, photograph it, and then mail it to the next participant. Be aware that this is an A color coin, and please be sure to take normal precautions with it. The final word on who may participate will rest with the owner of the coin, it is his decision alone to make. Regulars here are welcome, but if you just got here or don't have much of a history, you may not be allowed to participate.

Once all participants have entered, you will be assigned a participant number. This number must be placed in your photographs at the lower left corner. Photographs can be either two images, one of each side, or a combined image of both sides. Minimum size will be 500 pixels per side, maximum 800. Once you have completed your image, you will email it to me to host.

Important additional rule: To make this fair to all involved, your images must not be posted here prior to me posting the images for the contest. Do the best you can with it and email your best shot.

Here's the good part. The winner will receive a 1964 proof set in a Capitol holder! Hear that Russ? image

Michael and Brandon, I'll need PMs with your mailing addresses. This will cut down the work of me having to dig them up.

Eric, are you going to post the images without the name of the submitter attached? Also, how will the winner be determined, voting by everyone? I have attached my entire folio and will let you decide if I get to enter.

  • This is a great idea. I'm really looking forward to it. The photo contest last year was cool, but there were so many different coins - toners, bright white coins, lightside, darkside, etc. it was like comparing apples to grapes. Good work Eric.

And by the way, I'm not entering. My photo skills are nowhere near good enough.

Once I get all the participants information, I will assign participant numbers. This number must be embedded in your photograph in the lower right hand corner. I'll post an example shortly. Your picture will be posted in the contest thread and the images will not be identified as far as who took them. The winner will be determined by a poll, since members can only vote once in a poll. In the event there is a tie, I'm sure we can dig up a second prize.

Can we crack it out of the NGC slab first?

Interesting question. image What if the first member who images it puts the slab on the road and drives over it a couple of times, takes a knife and just scratches the holder up real good? Would suck to go behind him.

Here is an example for inserting your participant number in the image. For merged photos of both sides such as this, you will enter the number in the lower left hand corner. If you use separate images, be sure to add the number to each image.

Win or lose, I think it will be a blast to see the same coin imaged by everyone here. At the very least, everyone will get to see a pretty Morgan in hand!

    Eric,
    Put me on the list.

Though this is a logistical problem, shouldn't the judges have the coin in hand while voting? The voting should be based on the most realistic image, not necessarily the prettiest or most colorful, right?
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
Barry, that would be impossible. So, the best we can do is post all the images and let the board members vote.

I'll need a PM with your mailing address to add you to the list.

This sounds like a great idea. It will be very interesting to see everyones images. I am sure there will be a lot of photoshopping going on.

I would estimate that at a minimum of 5 days for each person to receive/photo/mail the coin that this contest will end sometime in July/August.

Yes, obviously it's going to take a while for the coin to get around. I'm hoping to get it all done in less than 90 days.

Some use image editors a lot, I don't use one outside of basic cropping and sizing. Most overprocessed images are pretty easy to spot.

Whoa, there's alot of participants. This IS going to take a while.

Should we agree on a certain shipping method such as USPS Express overnight to shorten the span of this contest? That way we can image it the day we recieve it and express mail it out either the same day or the next morning.

Brandon, express mail won't be necessary. We have enough participants that the hops are going to be very short. For example, you are in Dallas and we have another contestant in San Antonio. If some would like to help by sending it express, that will be fine, but not a requirement.
  • I would like to try it. I'll PM my address after I post this. It would be good to limit each photographer to a 1 day turn around. Say if I get it on a Tuesday I would have to photograph it either Tue afternoon or Wed morning and get it back in the mail Wed.
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
We have a lot of suggestions here, so I will address them.

We are not going to set a turnaround time. I realize some people have busy lives. While I hope most will turn the coin around quickly, I can understand where someone would need a few days. Since most feel this will be a lot of fun, I would think most would try to shoot the coin and have it on the way to the next participant as soon as possible.

We will be limiting this contest to the lower 48 US states. We just have too many participants to allow for the delays that would take place if the coin had to make a round trip to AK, HI, the US territories or Canada.

Here is some additional information for the contest:

There has been a new prize added. The prize for first place will be a four year run of US silver proof sets, 1961, 62, 63, 64. The 1964 silver proof set will be the second place prize. We have a couple of contestants who entered but do not want to be eligible for prizes. In the event one of these contestants wins a prize, the prize will be awarded to the next place finisher.

The owner of the coin has advised me that he wants it insured for $600. If this is a problem for anyone who has already entered, be sure to let me know.
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
One final bump. All entries must be received via PM by 9AM EDT tomorrow morning. I will be sending PMs throughout the day tomorrow to the participants with the details of who they will be receiving the coin from, who to send it to, and their participant number.
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
    Suggestion Eric...

We are approaching vacation season. It would be a shame for the coin to mailed to someone who is away for a week or more. Perhaps the planned route of the coin should be PMed to the participants and as each person receives the cion, post an update with date received and sent to the next person. That way, if someone is away, he can be moved down the list to a better time.
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
Barry, I'll be keeping tabs on the coin. Unfortunately, if someone is going to be away we'll have to pass them. Otherwise, the coin will zig zag across the country forever.
  • Coinhusker1Coinhusker1 Posts: 3,560
Also, given the coin is worth $600, everyone should try to use Registered Mail, which, I think, costs about the same as insured at that amount. With insured, the high amount of postage on a small package screams "steal me" to less ethical postal workers.

I figure there will probably be a lot of discussion once the images are posted. But for what it's worth, here's my setup:
