Morning, all. I'm home with a wicked cold, so I'll pass some time here. Lately I've been pretty focused in my buying, but I made an exception. I already had a Barber quarter already for my type set that is unquestionably a better coin, and a better date too, so strictly speaking this one should have been off limits by my own rules. Still, it swam by last month at what seemed like a fair price, and I liked the strike & overall look, so I bought it.

What do you think? Pretty? Ugly? I could see people going either way on this one. Guess grade if you like. I'll post it later on. Thanks for looking.

I like it. It looks original and I prefer it to the standard white look.
Grade? Hard to tell from your pictures but I'll venture its an MS 63.

Very nice coin. IMO there's nothing wrong with another Barber quarter when it's a nice one - and this one seems nice.
  • I like the toning, I can't stand pure white Barbers. The coin looks like it has nice underlying luster to it, especially the reverse. It's hard to guess the grade, the image isn't real clear. The right wing looks like it might have a little wear, in which case, I would say hi AU. If this isn't the case, I would go with MS63 or MS-64. The coin looks free from any noticeable hits. Nice coin!

Thanks for the nice comments, people. I, too, really like the look of this coin, but I was worried the streaky appearance of the toning (maybe it lived a long time in one of those little envelopes? My great granddad stored his coins that way, and a lot of them look like that) might be a turnoff to some. This seemed like an important consideration since, as it doesn't really have a place in the evolving scheme of my collection, this is probably one of those coins I'm just renting from the universe for a while.

It lives in an ANACS AU58 holder. There's a small, vaguely shiny rubbed area high on the lady's cheek, and a faint break in the luster in the field to the right of her nose, and that's basically all that separates it from mint state. A small hit on one of the obverse fields and a smaller one on her cap would probably make it a 63 otherwise, is my guess.

On a side note, I've been consistently pleased with ANACS' interpretation of the AU58 grade all along. From what I've seen they tend to be like this one, or close.

Nice pick up, and paying close to MS for a nice AU 58 sounds about right.

I also have found that ANACS grades do cross to PCGS usually at the grade ANACS graded it. I wish I could say the same thing with NGC coins, they usually get dropped a point or two on a cross over.

Nice and original. Nothing wrong at all with that one.

From the photo I don't see the AU grade. I'd say it's mint state. Often times ANACS is too tough on lower end MS coins and just calls them AU. Good catch. If this is in one of those older gold foil holders it is probably undergraded. A rub in the field rarely gets an AU grade by itself. And the forelock and wing tips look good which is a good sign it would pass as UNC. NGC and PCGS don't care about field rub until they hit the MS66 and higher grades on type coins.

I'm the opposite. I like white Barbers, and while there's nothing wrong with the toning on that coin, it looks a tiny bit streaky to me on the obverse.

Overall I find it decent looking, though. My vote on eye appeal is "slightly positive".

(And I imagine I'd like it better in hand, where I could see the luster.)

    Mirabela -

I agree with most of the others: Nice quarter.

I like the toning, even though it's a bit "streaky" on the obverse. Beats a dipped example.

Very ORIGINAL looking to me. Great pickup.

PS AU58? Looks every bit of UNC to me.
Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
