Coin dealers worth visiting in NYC?

I've recently gotten back into coin collecting after a 20-year hiatus.

My wife and I are in New York for a few days, and I thought I'd check to see if anyone had recommendations for coin dealers in Manhattan. I'm mostly looking for good quality early US coins for a type set.

Yesterday I stopped by a large, well-known dealer and was surprised/disappointed to be more or less dismissed by the guy there -- he said they don't have much in the way of early US coins after a show they attended, and appeared utterly uninterested in me as a customer.

Any advice on coin dealers in Manhattan?

thanks in advance,

David.

Does Smythe accept visitors and have a retail shop?

Longacre: I remember Smythe a few years back when Mr. Belzberg and I previewed an auction of theirs together and I did not recall much of a retail coin operation at the time. I am sure that MrEureka along with one of my favorite dealers from the late 1970's Jay Erlichman have straightened that out.

I did note an interesting and free May 4th program:

    May 4
Smythe Lunchtime Presentation Series at 12 Noon:
“Obsolete Currency”, given by Smythe's own Stephen Goldsmith.
Participants are asked to bring a sandwich; Smythe will provide soft drinks and dessert. Please call 800-622-1880 if you plan to attend!

Stacks is also an institution you must visit. There is an upcoming auction in which you could view a bunch of coins.

Yes on both counts, but most of our coins are not on display in the gallery. If you call ahead, and if I'm in town, I'm always more than happy to bring out coins for interested collectors. BTW, you can get a sense of our inventory at our website.

I work right across the street (120 Broadway). Can I come by some time and ask for you opinion on a particular coin I have?
