Bought My First Coin Today ...

... and am quite sure that I am addicted already :-) I have decided to begin with Morgan Dollars, as they are easy to come by, and try to put together the entire set from the Carson City mint. My first coin is the 1882 CC PCGS MS65. I have attached a pic (not a good pic as I only have a digital elph) but the coin looks a little beat up to be a 65. Any comments re whether it would be better to put together a toned set vs. untoned, or is it simply personal choice? After reading the various threads, I have concluded that the cameos are by far my favorite.

Toning that you like might be more of a challenge than all white coins.

Most excellent image. I'd consider getting an additional light to illuminate the lower half. Not bad with just an Elph. With images like that you should consider entering in the toned morgan photography contest hosted by K6AZ. That thread isn't that old so just do a search for "photography" and it will be one of the first to appear.

Nice and a CC Morgan is a great first coin to start off with.
  • Interesting coin...Like the die cracks on this one and the golden tone. Take a look at k6az's posts for a nice colorful toner.

Welcome, and please have loads of fun both on this forum and with searching for and acquiring coins. Especially Morgans. Come to think of it, perhaps you should have started with a series that is easier to drop. Once you are shin-deep in Morgans, you rarely either tire of them, or complete a collection which is complete enough for your taste.

Could you have come up with a more challenging group of 13 coins to put together to start with.....

  • Toning is probably a FAD! I collect a few toned coins but they r overpriced as a rule and hard to tell if they r doctored..........but mainly, I believe it's a passing fad. I would be worried about getting buried in the coin.
But finally, what really matters, do u like 'em? if so buy 'em!
