You cringed for SBA, you cried for Eunice -- get ready for these babes

As reported in other threads, the Presidential Dollar coin legislation has passed the House (HR902). The dark underside of this bill are the 24K 1/2 ounce gold coins, with portraits of past First Ladies. You thought it was bad with Susan B Anthony or Eunice Shriver? Get ready for some of these babes, this time in gold:

And of course, no collection of First Lady Gold would be complete without these two:

I can't wait ...

Some, yes -- I shudder; Eunice all over again.
<< <i>Actually, a fair number are pretty decent looking (not like we care what the dead president men look like), especially for their age. Keep in mind that little if any makeup was used back then, so this (apart from working on the hair) is what you would have awakened with.

I don't think any amount of makeup would help Mrs. Grant or Mrs. Garfield. Mamie Eishenhower's problem is her Mickey Mouse hairdo.

I am so disappointed that only 6 congress members had the nads to vote against this.

Which, of course, is why I said *some*. Nevertheless, if you're in your 50s and 60s as most presidents are, I'd wager most men of that era woke up next to something even scarier by our standards today.
Mamie Mouse, eh? I was thinking Princess Leia, but okay. I don't want to scar my teenage memories of wanting Carrie Fisher by associating Mamie with that, so okay -- I'm with you there.

I stand corrected.

The legislation specifies that if a President did not have a First Lady, that a depiction of Liberty be used.
Also, as President Arthur's wife died before he took office, and therefore was never technically First Lady, an alternate will be used. Are you ready for this? It will be suffragette Alice Paul, who was born during Arthur's presidency.
<< <i>This whole thing is stupid. We are treating the presidents like royalty, which is precisely what our founding fathers would not have wanted.

I think much of our coinage could stand to be refreshed, and I would love to get back to beautiful depictions of Lady Liberty, rather than the faces of the sometimes questionable/fallible/human presidents we've had. Plus, I read somewhere that Washington flat-out refused to allow a coin to be minted with his likeness on it-didn't think leaders being deified was proper or appropriate for a country that just fought a war to depose a monarchy.
Of course, I'm biased, as I think the Walker half and the St. Gaudens $20 are the most beautiful coins our country ever minted!
