New $1 coins?

Anybody have further details on this? Would they roll out over many years like the quarter? Is this to encourage use or have people collect them (make money for mint)?
Thanks!

I saw the same story. I don't think the picture on the coin is going to change the fact that most people don't want these coins for daily use. Not as long as the greenback is still around.
<< <i>Officials at the Mint estimate said the new $10 bullion coin could help the United States grab a bigger share of the global market in gold collector coins. They estimate that the potential world market for 24-karat gold coins is about $2.4 billion annually. >>
Yet another mint flop. Do politicians not realize that nobody wants to look at the faces of first ladies? Do they not realize that most people can't even NAME more than a few of the first ladies (or presidents either, for that matter)? Wow I can have a 24 kt coin with Dolly Madison staring at me, or I could buy one with a cool panda design from China...I'd much rather the panda.
people are going to collect them just like the statehood quarters
if they're just after that, why don't they make presidential $100 bills and sell those? cost even less to produce
<< <i>Nothing will change in commerce until more vending machines accept dollar coins. >>
Contact your vending machine operator. All modern vending machines are able to accept dollar coins. There's a little switch inside that turns the feature on or off -- if you catch the machine when it's open, you can hack it yourself; it's easy. All the vending machines around me take dollar coins, and most take $2 bills as well!
