Input about this 1889 morgan silver dollar please

Can I get some input on this morgan dollar? If you all wouldn't mind telling me what you think of the coin in general and the grade and what you might pay for it. Thank you image

Looks MS to me, probably a collector submission.
  • What would you pay for this coin...average??

I try to buy 62 and above most of the time. I can tell you the coin has a retail value of about $25.
  • Oh good!! I paid $19.99 for it. It's my first old coin that I've purchased and was just crossing my fingers about it image

Be very careful buying coins online in this holder. Check out the links in my sig line for more information.
  • Oh Boy!!! Guess I didn't do so good on my first old coin purchase hu!?!?!?! I didn't realize there were crappy coin grading companies out there...I just thought it was good to purchase them graded image.

  • So when I get it can I open it and send it to a more reputable coin grading company? I see a lot of pcgs coins....maybe them??

Actually, the coin is a pretty obvious mint state specimen. It costs an average of over $20 a coin for grading at PCGS. If it were my coin, I would break it out and put it in an album.
  • Doesn't mint state mean that it's in really good shape and worth getting graded?

Not for this date in a low MS grade. The coin has a retail value of about $25. Do you really want to spend over $20 to have it graded?
  • You're right...good point! Thanks for your input image

It looks like there might be some rim damage over by the E in E Pluribus Unum. Can't tell for sure in the picture.

  • Not a bad coin for $20. Nice strike and luster. I'd put it in an album, or a nice coin holder, such as an Intercept Shield or Coin World holder.

Just a thought, an accurately graded coin in that holder might be a collectors item if not now, someday. I'd keep it right were it is if it were mine.

  • IMO, I think the coin is mis-graded. It looks better than what the holder says. Gee, can I get sued for expressing my opinion??

If you get some sort of free grading from a membership somewhere, I'd crack it out and submit it. The reverse looks 64-65 to me.

Until then, I guess the holder provides a level of protection greater than having it raw.

It may be common but it sure looks nice and 20 bucks was a good price. I say "well done!"
  • Whew...thanks for all the input...don' feel bad about my purchase now image

  • I never thought I'd say this about an ACG coin, but it looks better than the stated grade to me. If it looked good in-hand, I'd buy it (for a good price) and crack it out.
  • I might see if when I get it I can scan it in and maybe get more pictures and then see what you all think I should do again image
