I'm looking for a rough value on an 1844 $1 sight unseen

One of my wife's friends has a chance to buy a 1844 Liberty Seated dollar from another person. The other person took it to a coin shop and was offered $100 for it. I'm sorry that I don't have more details but based on a coin shop offering someone $100 for it would anyone care to take a guess on a possible grade and value. I was told it looks really good and hopefully I'll get to see it soon.

The Red Book shows the value in VF-20 as $375 so that's what I'm guessing because I don't think a dealer would offer someone $100 for a coin that has a Red Book value of $200. Does anyone have any opinions? If this coin was an AU ($1100 in Red Book) do you think that dealers would really offer that low of a figure for it? Right now I'm just looking for a couple of opinions so I can give her a ballpark figure.

If I get any more info I'll post an update.

Thanks,
Millertime

well okie here is a rough value

lets assume the coin is a solid xf45 and lets also assume the coin has good eye appeal or as good as eye appeal as you can get for an xf45 seated dollar and also lets assume the coin has no hairlines and is an original grey coin

and has never been cleaned and with no edge bangs or serious digs or other problems and just has honest wear and a dove grey coloration

then this coin to me is worth 600-675 dollars i would certainly pay 600 dollars for it

Michael, this is the kind of info I'm looking for. Do you think a coin shop would really offer someone that doesn't know what they have a $100 for the coin you described?

okie lets assume you got an original au a middle for the grade au say au-55 and it has a wonderful thick original skin to it with good lustre and has above average eye appeal and is also fully struck with no problems whatsoever

i would say it is worth between 1500-1800 i would be happy to pay 1500 for it

well i do not know why the coin shop alledegly offered $100 or what the coin looks like

but what i do know is that if you showed me the coin i can tell you the grade
    its problems or not
and its eye appeal and/or originality
and finally what the coin is worth if you offered it to an interested party

Dealers will take a rip whenever they can. If they were willing to offer $100 then it's probably worth at least 5 times that. If the coin was only worth $300 then they probably would have offered $30-$50.

The first thing I would do is to make sure its authentic! There are a lot of fakes coming out of china these days.

Words of a coin dealer (anonymous):

"If this coin was an AU ($1100 in Red Book) do you think that dealers would really offer that low of a figure for it?"

The anonymous quoted dealer above would.

Thanks for the info everyone. The lady that was offered $100 by the coin dealer is going to sell it to my wife's friend for $50 because that's all she needs for something. I was asked what it was worth by the lady buying it for $50. I guess I could tell her it's fake and offer to buy it for $100 image. Hopefully I'll be able to see it and if I can figure out if my camera will take a decent picture I'll post it here.
