How many 1870-CC Seated Halves are known(est.)?

Is there any estimates floating around? The date just seems so undervalued and really hasn't appreciated nearly as much as some of its early CC counterparts. Seems like it hasn't even doubled in the last fifteen years. Whereas the 70-cc Quarter has fivefolded. Any thoughts? (and pictures!)
Collecting since 1976.

They seem to be around in low grades, check ebay and you will find 4 for sale right now. A board member just sold a nice good specimen on ebay a week or two ago for about $1200 . Higher graded pieces are a true rarity. Although an XF40 was for sale few weeks ago, don't remember where though. I run across them while searching for the elusive quarter.

I don't think they are underpriced at all compared to the 70cc quarter. Just 8,340 where minted compared to 54,617 halves.

Last year PCGS AG quarter was on CCE for just under $1,000 and I missed it. Sold before I could get it.

Only 2 quarters have been sold this year that I know of. The richmond gem for around $55k and then B&M just sold a VF25 for $18,000 including juice. 18k seems pretty strong, but just try and find a problem free specimen. People pay strong money because there just aren't that many. When they do come for sale you better be ready or you will be disapointed.

I am looking for one and can't find one that I can afford. I was willing to pay $11,00 for the VF specimen but you see I am not even close to touching it. So I am bound to find the best low grade or net graded coin I can.

If anyone knows of any for sale please keep me in mind.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

there was a horde of about 90 or so pieces discovered of this date and this happened in the early 1980's???

so currently there is i would guesstimate about 175 or so in all grades and out of these 175 coins maybe 6 are unc??

that is my best edgeamakated guesstimate

looks like all went into circulation in 1870 and really circulated extensively

in this market a lower circ grade with no problems and good+ eye appeal will bring multiples of listed values in the guides

Even in the 1970's when I surveyed these the 70cc was one of themost underrated halves. Certainly tougher than the other cc halves following it. Michael's estimate of 175 is probably not too far off. 125-250 probably brackets the range with 150-200 being the most likely imo. The coin probably seemed extra scarce back then because someone was hoarding them during the period.

It's value in 1975 was about $200-250 in fine. I'll let you decide what it's worth today. NO doubt nice F-XF coins are probably underpriced. The few "uncs" running around are not that nice but they are the best available. I'm not aware of any blazing, honest to goodness original near killer gem in existence. Probably doesn't exist.

  • Michael, I believe the "hoard" you are referring to was the Berlinghof hoard............... But, that was 1873-CC, not 1870

Rusty Goe in his book " The Mint on Carson Street" estimates 125-150 in all grades.
