Can someone tell me more about this 1942 nickel I have.

I guess my biggest question is because it doesn't look like it is silver....it has this darker color to it that I can't seem to explain image Even the background isn't silver looking...quite pretty I think, just very different. Thank you for all that can give me an insight.

It's 35% silver. They all get pretty dark in circulation.

Someone in the past could have coated it in mercury which would cause it to have a strange look.

My guess would be that the copper in the coin is starting to green which is causing the coin to look strange.

From the Redbook, (cause my memory is so faulty, I was about to claim they were 40% silver)....

    56% Copper
    35% Silver
    9% Manganese

So, it's a much different alloy than the 90% silver and 10% copper that we are used to calling "silver".

Most of the circulated coins get the darker look that yours is showing.

Looks normal to me. Most war nicks look this way when circulated. My mom has close to a thousand she inherited from her father and they all look like that.
  • Thanks for all the info image It's not turning green, just dark. Really smooth feeling too....I like it image Think I'll keep it image
