1964 *SEALED* Proof sets

What is with these all over on ebay. Are they really sealed or are these envelopes made and searched sets being put in to look like they are sealed?

It just means that they are currently sealed

  • I was buying those at about $11, unopened a few years ago. What are they at now?

But I also see alot of empty new looking envelopes floating around on ebay. Not too hard to buy those then throw your searched proof set in there, seal it up and wala.

And going for about $14-16 now

  • Never thought of that, Trinketts. I always wondered about the unopened GSA Morgans which occasionally pop up. They bring about $600, and most likely contain a $200 coin. Wonder if those guys have a way to xray the coin for a date?

A lot of them are crap (spots, streaks, haze, ugly toning, etc).

The vast majority listed on eBay are picked over and repacked, and the suckers are lining up at 50% over Ask.

I actually saw a listing the other day with a title that read RARE OPENED 1964 proof set. image

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • Back "in the day" the Millennium Coinage and Currency sets were selling for like $100 if they'd been opened, $125 if still in their shrinkwrap. As if you can't go down to the local office supply store and shrinkwrap a set.
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Actually, nobody started opening proof sets until about 3-4 years ago- that's why there are still millions of unopened sets still floating around at reasonable prices..... image

Mark, we had this discussion a year or so ago.....at that time, I asked the same question you did... Mark (Mgoodm3...a different "Mark" than you obviously) has access to an xray machine through his work. He mentioned the answer was "no".

His icon coin is actually an xray pic of a coin he did in the course of answering that question image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
