Rosemont Il International Coin Show

Many bad omens told me not to go to the Rosemont International Coin Show but went anyway. I tried to check Thursday to verify address as Holiday Inn in Rosemont on River Road. My AOL didn't work and had to be re installed. After that the net still said Holiday Inn, Rosemont. Drove there in the rain and spent almost an hour finding the place and I only live 5 miles away. There was a show at the Rosemont Threater so lots of traffic. Police directing traffic said no coin show they know of and no signs anywhere. Finally one officer said that place called the Crown Plaza Hotel used to be the Holiday Inn so went into the parking lot. $15 to park there. Got out of the car and the dash started to go ding, ding, ding and the parking lights wouldn't shut off. More bad omens. Paid $5 to get in to the coin show and received a $6 off parking coupon. About 70 dealers, mostly well dressed in white shirts and ties and some in suits. Many of the buyers also were all dressed up as if going to a wedding. One PCGS rep, one seller of coin books and magazines, one table full of FREE papers and magazines on coins such as Numismatic News, Coin Market, etc. I tried to ask dealers if they had any US coins and was treated as if I swore at them. One dealer told me to move along, there are REAL collectors trying to see his merchandise. There was no one else around. Several told me that US coins are not allowed here with REAL coins. Most dealers and buyers were very rude and ignorant as to interrupting me when I tried to ask or say anything. I tried to discuss the PCGS forum with a few dealers and one actually told me I should go home and play with that web site. You could hear many buyers bragging about their valuable collections. More bad omens. I found two dealers that did have US coins but the prices were out of site and no kind of discount from as marked. I asked why so high prices and was told this is a high class place and you've got to pay for it. I've got a box of foreign coins at home but not really a foreign coin collector and that show made me want to throw the whole box in the garbage. I've never been to a coin show where people were that moronic. I left that show really irritated with only the free stuff from that one table and now to face the problem with the car and all for $9 prking and $5 to get in. As soon as I opened the car door the dash started to ding, ding, ding again and the parking lights were still on. I drove to the car dealer where I bought the car and pulled it into the service area. I tried to explain the problem but now all was back to normal, no lights on and no dash going ding, ding, ding. I think the car did not like the coin show either. I do have the ticket that would allow me to get in free tomorrow but would have to pay for parking again and face the same idiots again. Wanted to look at some great coins but lost all motivation at that place.

Anyone else go, and have similar findings? I can't believe that all the dealers would've been like this, but I wasn't there...

Err, I was under the impression that "international" meant that it was specifically a darkside (foreign) coin show. That might explain why they were a little put off by someone asking for US material?

    Peaceman makes a good point.

BTW, I had a table at the show, I had good US and world coins for sale, and I enjoyed myself.

Man, it's hard enough to push that tired old darkside stuff no one wants - you'd think the dealers would've made a special effort to ensure you didn't feel as though they were doing you a favor! image

Darkside material is very interesting but it also involves thin markets and old style high margin dealing.

That sounds like a real bummer of a show! No Fun.

Read your post on the Itasca show. i went there as well, but did not set-up (I normally set-up at that show).

That was by far the worst attended Itasca show I recall in 15+years. I wouldn't let that guide you. if you live close, you should go back. It's free and parking is free, so the only thing to lose is a few bucks of gas.

In any case, there are always a few good forum members to chat with (Marty and myself...but that may be reason enough to avoid the show all together).

Sorry to hear about the show..and funny that you car didn;t like it either.

I went to the International show yesterday and had a good time. I do tend to focus on US coins, but am also working on collecting a set of the twelve Caesars. The guys that had US stuff, didn't have a lot with them. This is an international show. If the dealers had US coins, they would have at least some of them on display. If you didn't see any and then asked for US, they probably didn't respond with favoratism. I took some time to talk to dealers about the ancients and learn a little about them. There are only a couple of dealers that I tend to work with because they have always been more than willing to take their time at shows to educate me. Cudo's to Pegasi. They are by far the nicest guys to work with. I got two bronze coins for my collection, Caligula and Claudius.

Andy, I wish I knew you were there. I have a 1971-S Jefferson nickel that I want someone with more knowledge than me to look at. I was also hoping to run into Marty. I did stop by PCGS who had someone there that would give an opinion on it and he thinks 69 DCAM which would be really cool. More info on this will follow. I have some pictures and will be submitting it soon.

Overall, I thought this was a good show and continues to be educational for me. I saw some cool antiquities, cool ancients, and a couple of really cool toned Great Britain coins. Yes, it was a lot of money to park and get in for the hour and a half that I was there, but I felt I got my money's worth.

I will agree that it was confusing being at the Crown Plaza. I have gone in the past cople of years so I knew where to go. I was talking to a guy going in and said that the hotel changed names. Maybe the organizers should have known that.

Actually if you like ancient coins, world coins, tokens and medals - it's a wonderful show. Lots of fun and nice dealers - but you won't find too many slabbed coins - most of those guys like their coins "naked" so they can fondle them! image

Was at the show Friday and Saturday, had a good time. Yes the dealers at this show do tend to dress a little better than the dealers at shows geared toward US coins but I doubt if more than a couple dozen were wearing ties and the public was dressed about the same as every other show I've been to. Some of the dealers there had some US material, about 60% or so of the show was directed towards ancient coins. 10% darkside pre 1800. Possibly 3% was US material.

I've neve had any problems with any of the dealers being rude.

    As for this

<< <i>One dealer told me to move along, there are REAL collectors trying to see his merchandise. Several told me that US coins are not allowed here with REAL coins. >>

I have heard the same complaints voiced by darkside collectors about shows that have mostly US coins. As for the prices, well I will say that the dealers do bring their more expensive material to this show, although I saw more lower priced stuff this year than in the previous couple years. As for the dealers disinterest in this forum, well until recently darksiders had little or no interest in slabbing. Interest is rising, but mostly from litesiders who are coming over to the darkside bringing their dependancies with them.
