I was about to pull the trigger on this coin when 2 others sniped in with about 15 seconds to go. It quickly jumped from $2650 to $3100. Judging from the early holder and the brightness, I would not be surprised to see this upgrade to either 66RB or 65RD. The seller only had 25 feedbacks and all the past month or so on $25 items. It was odd that he jumped to $3000 coins all of a sudden, and they were all old holders. The same 1882-s dollar in MS64 sold twice the same day (same cert #) to two different bidders. While this could be on the up and up, and just had an odd feel to it.
If the cent is legit, someone will probably do well on it. This may even be a forum member based on the sniping technique.

That's the sheer beauty of it. It knocks down most of the competition on these early holders. If there were perfect pictures showing the coin as a stone upgrade you'd never be able to buy it close to the holdered grade. I picked up a couple of $20 LIbs in 63 the past few days in old holders. The first one came in and was a stone cold MS64. One can usually tell from the sellers if the coins are fresh, or tired and run through the mill. Let's just say I won't buy early holders from the usual retailers on ebay. That's a waste of time. In fact, I can say that the first gen business on ebay offers far less risk than trying to buy an average looking PCGS coin near bid prices.
The one shot of the reverse on this 09-s is killer and looks full red.
Even if the obverse is 80% red, the odds are that the coin is high end for the grade and is certainly worth far more than a kool aid version that brings $2800-3100 at auction. You know by definition that those coins had no chance at upgrades because they didn't fetch more. I'd give the new owner of this 09s an instant profit but I'm sure he was prepared to go higher. The bigger risk is the newbie seller however.

I agree, I might have bid if I saw it, but oh well
