Is nickle an accepted alternate spelling for nickel?

I'd never seen nor heard of nickle before I started noticing quite a few eBay auctions selling 5c Jefferson nickles. At first I thought it was just normal bad spelling/grammar, but with the quantity I'm seeing now I'm wondering if I just didn't know that was a correct alternate spelling. This kinda thing just drives me a little nuts while searching the Bay.

    No. Nickle is a misspelling.

Absolutely. Nickel like the metal. "Nickle" is in some dictionaries, but if you use it, you'll look like a dolt image

crafting a search for a 2000-P and 2000-D PCGS MS66FS nickel is crazy hard on eBay. I haven't seen any for a while, so maybe my search sucks, it's hard to try and figure out all the possible different ways this could get listed, while preventing 500 auctions from showing up by just searching for 2000 pcgs. Adding 'nickle' to that search isn't nearly as annoying as searching for (millenium, millennium, milenium, milennium) and even with that I'm sure I've missed an auction or five for a milenhium Sac$.

Hey... a nickle is a nickel... that's what grandma aways said. Of coarse, there's still only one proper spelling for the word.

  • Wekar - I feel your "ebay search pain" - As a fall-back position, go to US Coins and do a search on "2000." I know, I know, it'll give you a lot of stuff you're not interested in, but if you're patient in scanning, at least you won't miss anything!

  • A nickle is a nikkle is a nichle is a nickel.

What's in a name? That which we call a nickel by any other name would still just be 5c. Unless it were a Jefferson nickle, then apparently it's just modern crap.

  • Thanks Mike, but what I'm sure you meant to say was, "do a search on (2000,2000p,2000d,00,00p,00d)" heheh.

  • just so y'all can see what a difference your search terms make:

eBay search in US Coins results
    # auctions Search term
    2132 2000
    2232 (2000,2000p,2000d)
    3156 (2000,2000p,2000d,00,00p,00d)
