K-539 ULRICH’S CROSS (FOR Prelate J.M. Friesenegger, Augusburg), 1937, Incuse Reverse Cast AE, 240mm X 242mm, Incuse edge punch. UNC, RRRR
Karl Goetz in his biography writes the following about this cross: “Prelate Friesenegger died on May 18th, 1937. He was well known as the author of the book ’Ulrich’s-Kreuze’ and also a keen collector of such crosses. On his death I received the commission to create a large ‘Ulrich Cross’ in bronze which was mounted on his grave slab.”
The scene on the cross depicts battle action of Bishop Ulrich leading his forces against the Hungarians on the Lechfeld in 955. Goetz’s assertion that Ulrich himself took part in the battle is incorrect, as Ulrich could not have broken through the ranks of the Magyars.

This plaque is considered to Goetz collectors to be the ‘Holy Grail’ of the available Goetz material for collection. It is possible that this is the only piece in private collection.
