Is ANACS grading harder/better than PCGS?

I went to my local coin dealer's shop yesterday, and he had quite a few slabbed Morgans. They were in ANACS, PCGS, and few NCG slabs. I'm no expert on Morgan grading, but I have seen a lot in my lifetime. To me the ANACS coins looked better in the same grade than the PCGS coins. In fact some of them looked two or three grades better. I compared a 1879-S PCGS MS65 to a 1881-S ANACS MS62 and the 62 looked at least as good as the PCGS MS65. A 1881-S PCGS MS62 looked like a dog. The difference between it and the ANACS MS62 was amazing.
I thought about buying the ANACS MS62, cracking it out and sending it to PCGS for an upgrade. If he still has it next week I may do that.

Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?

YES, and also harder than NGC, My unattributed VAM 4 1922 Peace Dollar was in an NGC MS64 holder, I crossed it to ANACS and now its an MS63 VAM-4 DDO Top 50. All of my ANACS Peace dollars from ANACS look better than their PCGS "equals"
BTW I like the smaller holders too.

And they're even harder on bullion. ANACS MS69 Eagles are truly "rare" -- typically they get grades of 66 and 67. I'd pay very strong money for an ANACS MS69 1986 Silver Eagle.
<< <i>I've found ANACS to be pretty good with earlier material, and downright stingy with modern stuff.

Too bad they don't grade currency.

I have seen very few "mistakes" in ANACS holders.
They are right there with PCGS and I like them better
than NGC.

Well I sent it in to ANACS and its coming back to me know... in a PF66 FSB HVY CAM slab. Guess it's time to send it off to PCGS for the upgrade.
No kidding. Try to find an ANACS MS69 in ANTYHING - modern or not. Even finding a 68 is tough.

ANACS: 1234 items
ANACS 69: 1 item (modern gold)
PCGS: 8409 items
PCGS 69: 491 items
Not an entirely fair test as most don't submit moderns to ANACS.

<< <i>Brutal is the word, ANACS is for sure down right tough on grades. If you all remember this dime I showed last week you see why.

How do you know when the coin is accurately graded? Is it when you get the highest number possible?
Leo
The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

It may also be because not many people submit their best coins to ANACS.
Better: on non-variety coins definately not.

Yes, why do you think people submit the same coin 5-10 times (or more) and it comes back the same grade everytime until the last time when they finally get their upgrade then they consider it fairly graded.

Indeed. Without the driver of a registry set, there's just not that much demand for high grade moderns.

<< <i>From what I have observed in my two areas of interest ANACS coins bring considerably less money than PCGS, and NGC fits somewhere in the middle. >>
The question wasn't about money -- how do you feel about ANACS' grading?
Also, I tend to disagree about the money. With the exception of registry-driven, super high grade coins, I find that ANACS sells for about on par with NGC and PCGS. As an example, take Gettysburg halves in MS64. It's a nice, attractive grade, yet not really registry material. Looking back at Heritage prices for the past three years, the average price for all MS64s is $326. The average of ANACS MS64s is $328, the average for PCGS MS64s is $338, and the average for NGC MS64s is $313. Interestingly, the highest of all prices is $495, an ANACS slab.
Oh - and as I've mentioned before, all of the "modern" haters should take just a minute to thank the US Mint for the statehood quarter program, since it (along with the new nickels) have been the major influence on the numismatic market catching fire in the last few years...a rising tide floats ALL boats, and by increasing the number of collectors and the general level of interest, all varieties benefit from an influx of new collectors who eventually branch out into other "non-modern" series.

<< <i>Just before checking in here at the US coin forum, I submitted essentially the same question to HomeRunHall, basically asking his opinion on the consistency between the "major" TPGs. >>
While I'd certainly be interested in his opinion, I can't imagine HRH commenting publicly on other TPGs, major or otherwise.
I tried to couch my question as benignly as I could, but my feeling is that it won't be answered - I asked for an "opinion" and did mention that in reading coin periodicals, you do see that graders jump from company to company - who knows, just maybe he'll have some response.
