1801 half: my PCGS quarterly freebie

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,645 ✭✭✭✭✭

Shown below is the 1801 half from my collection. It is eligible for the quarterly freebie submission for this month, and I'll be sending it in the next few days. By the way, the submissions have to be postmarked by March 31 for the 1st quarter. Any guesses on what it will grade/bodybag?

That's a pretty half. I see no reason to BB that coin. image

I grade the coin F12. It looks really nice and original, a rare find, as 1801's tend to be abused from cleaning, scratches, etc.

F15, IMO... but Varlis might be more correct than myself, as I don't have as much experience with Open Collar strikes... image

My guess would be F-15 also. If you are worried about a BB why not just send it to me. That way you won't have to worry any more, and I promise to give it a good home and take good care of it...image

    btw - real good photographs.

Wonderful, original looking rare coin. Looks every bit of Fine to me, let's say Fine-12 and hope for a 15.

Here's one of my 1801s, this one grades Good-6 or so:

Baley, you 1801 looks OK as a VG-8 to me based upon the shield lines and hairl detail.

A very nice 1801. Looks almost identical in wear to the draped bust graded F12 by Overton in his refernce book.

It appears to be an O.101, this is the same variety as mine. I like the coin in the F12 range. Here's mine, the image is a bit dark as the coin is completely original, and PCGS gave it VF30, which I think was a tad generous.

All of you guys with 1801 halves suck. If you have an 1802 you suck even more. image If you have a 1796 or 1797 I don't even talk to me.
BTW Every price guide I've seen for the 01 and 02 are not even close to what it takes to get one of these coins.

My 2004 Redbook says I can get an 1802 half in F-12 for $450 and VF-20 for $850. But those are high retail prices, so I'd never pay that. image

I'd be happy to get one for TWICE those numbers.

    Bailey,

Did you see the F-12 that just closed in Sheridan Downey's latest aution last week. Hammered at 950 against an underbid of 900. (plus 10% juice.) I wish I had seen your wanna buy post before it closed.

From Sheridan's description and the pics it was a nice original coin. It had the normal tics and marks that come with a fine, but no mistreatment. Stman would have given it his crusty approval.
