2005 ASE question?

Hello all
I just got three 2005 ase proofs from the mint. I noticed on the obverse of one that it has an orange-peeling. Has anyone else seen this on their 2005s? and is this common?
Thanks

  • I'm not sure what you mean by orange-peeling. I also received 3 from the mint today. The right obverse field does look "wavey" on two of the coins. I have never seen it on a ASE proof before.

  • I looked through some articles on the net, Im not sure but It might have to do with the metal temp when its struck. peeling is I guess what I mean is, it looks like a ripple effect.

Yes ripple does describe the effect. It is on two of the three coins I received. I haven't looked at them under a loop yet. Might be all three.

  • Seems magnification does nothing......Shows up better using just the old eyes......

I would like to hear from others who have seen this on this years proofs.......or anything else they may have noticed, like the "sun spots" on years past. Thanks.

You know what the bad thing about this is, if you send them back then some other unsuspecting collector will get them. As I doubt very seriously they will remove them from distribution. I have seen the sun spots on the Mint sets but not on the proof sets. I know now to inspect them before I stash them away.
