What ever happened to those real GOLD Sacky dollars?

orevilleoreville Posts: 12,292 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do I recall that the US Mint made some real gold Sacky dollars?

If so what has happened to them?

Thanks.

Good question. You'd think the Mint would legally monetize them and allow them to be auctioned off to benefit something like numismatic
    museums or YN programs.

There were 39 minted, with all but 12 melted. Those twelve went into space on the Columbia in 2000. They then ended up in Fort Knox, where they remain.

Lots of good info on this stuff at Small Dollars.

I don't think they ever resolved the question about whether the Mint had legal authority to mint them in the first place.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

The mint wanted to make the gold Sac1$ to sell to the public. The idea was nixed when the mint realized that the non gold Sac 1$ could be sold as the 24 carat gold versions by the scammers.

If they tone during re-entry, is that considered AT?

I wish they would sell Gold versions of these dollars.

If they wanted to issue them and stop any confusion instead of one dollar on the reverse have it say "gold dollar".

But in order to make ANY alteration to the coin they would need congressional approval, correct? I just say that they should only mint the gold coins at West Point so that any Sac with a 'W' mintmark would be a gold one.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

    That would work as well.

But I figured if it said Gold Dollar nobody would or could be fooled, at least people with an oz of smarts.

But people who did not know that the real gold ones said "Gold Dollar" would still wind up getting swindled by being sold regular "Golden Dollars" for rediculus sums.

I may be wronge but isn't gold only handled and minted at West Point already. And that picture flaminio posted shows a W mint mark.
