Is this an original 1954 proof set?

The coins are in individual plastic bags held together with a single staple. Is this how they were packaged by the mint?

I believe that the pre-1955 proof sets did come packaged like that. The coins were also inside a small box.

Yes. They were packaged in individual bags held together with a staple. The bags were placed in tissue paper and then in a small greenish box. The box was sealed with paper tape - wrapped once around. I've never seen a '54 where the box was stamped with the date (like the 1955's). Normally the date was written on the box someplace.

I would be wary of proof sets that are out of the original container. The plastic slips in the photo look very different than those I have seen upon opening the boxes. The plastic looked to be ribbed or folded in most sets - more brittle than suptle. (Modern plastic additives and slip agents have improved plastic films.)

The staple looks new. Most of the staples are rusted.

I'm no expert, but that does not look original.

I have seen two types of bags for 54 sets. One is the cello bag that you see in the 50-53 sets. But I have also seen the bags that look like polyethylene. I usually look at the staple - if it is clean with no rust, then I am wary. No way a staple will be pristine in that environment for 50 years.

Either way - the cello bags sometimes caused glue spots and hairlines. But the poly bags can cause haze.

The 1955 box came with this type of plastic but I haven't seen 54 or earlier this way. The plastic for the earlier sets is a much more brittle hard plastic which is usually faded a to a light brown appearance.

Is this an original 1954 proof set?
