New Proof Picture Taking Setup - Ultracheap for Russ/MadMarty Wannabees

MrSpudMrSpud Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭
For those of us Russ/MadMarty Wannabees who haven't ever struck it rich by making those Super low Pop Graded Slabs, here is my latest picture taking setup that provides an almost Russ/MadMarty like picture of Cameo Proofs. Forget all those expensive photographic accessories like lampshades, lights, Cameras that cost over $125. Attached is a picture of a 69 Kennedy Proof along with a pic of my latest setup using a free light diffuser, a free light source and an inexpensive Kodak Easyshare camera. Just put the coin in the bottom of the glass, err... I mean Diffuser, and put it next to the window, err... I mean light source, and rest the camera on the top of the diffuser pointing down and snap away. Thanks for looking.

Cool. Milkjugs work pretty well too, as do diffuser panels from overhead fixtures.

Does Mrs Heath let you put her bra over them???
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Well, I do have a $41 copy stand and three desk lamps, plus the lamp shade. image

$41, wow, I beat you there. I was quite pleased to find that, just by coincidence, the camera resting on top of the glass, err... I mean diffuser, just happens to put the coin into perfect focus with my camera. image The only thing I haven't worked out that would make the pics more Russ/MadMarty like is that the mirrors on the coin reflect color from my hand on the bottom portion of the coin and off of the camera on the top portion of the coin. So I don't quite get the black/white Cameo contrast like they do. I still am pretty pleased with the quality of the pictures though.

I'm liking the simplicity of this method...... I'll have to give it a shot! image

Great info in these threads on cheap ways of changing the lighting. Everything I have is flourescent, so it comes out just that.... flourescent looking. I tried putting some kind of filter in between the lighting source and the coin and at least for once some of the detail comes out. Gotta work on it though as I have some glare spots and almost makes the coin look chromed. image

Sweet set-up. Really. The effect is very good, and you can't argue about the expense. Those plastic cups are a little expensive, though. image
