Starred reverse 1794 Large Cent in EF40 - value?

northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
In glancing through the offerings inthe upcoming ANR auction of the Richard Jewell Collection came across a 1794 Large Cent EF40 (NGC) Starred Reverse large cent with a starting bid of $58,100. In the listing reference was made to only 50-55 total starred reverse coins being existant. Question No.1 - How high will the bidding go on this one? Question No. 2 - How much would a VF example of the Starred Reverse in a SEGS holder go for (at least I think mine is a VF if I recall correctly.)

  • In a SEGS holder, $20,000.

    Other opinions?
  • If I remember correctly there is only on S-48 that reaches the XF level and that was the Adams coin XF-40. At some time after the Adams sale somebody stripped the coin to a dead gray color. Since then it has been recolored to a much more natural appearance. So if this is the Adams coin, it has been cleaned and recolored.

Just looked at it, that's not the Adams coin, and I don't have my copy of "The Starred Reverse" here so I can't look to see where it stands in the condition census.

Wow, what a memory. Is your "copy" of the starred reverse a reference to a book or a coin in hand?
  • It's a book written by Pete Smith, it traces the history of the variety, condition census, and pedigrees of every known specimen. It was written about 12 years ago (250 copies were printed) and updated in Penny-Wise about two years ago.

That was definitely a neat discovery and article.
How many of you would have done what he did and notified the shop owner about it potentially being a Starred reverse?

<< <i>The stars can not be seen in the photo, even if the photo is enlarged. >>

If you know what you are looking for the stars ARE clearly visible in the picture.

<< <i>We do not want this coin returned, so please make sure that this coin is right for you before bidding. >>

I really don't think they are going to have to worry about it being returned.

Does anyone have this theroy, that the 94 stars punched into the die that may represent the 94 signers of the declaration of Independance; may be the quanity struck? In other words, only 94 coins struck.

The second is highly unlikely. There are too many S-48s around for only 94 to have been struck.
