What are you plans, if any, as to the 2005 Bison nickels?

Bags and two-roll sets go on sale next Monday. What do you think: a good investment, a huge rip-off, or something in between? Do you plan to purchase any from the mint?

  • I'll buy 1 roll of each, probably from the Mint.

Might consider buying 1 of any "special" set(s) they put together.

Some rolls from the bank to spread around a bit. A couple for keepers. I'll try to pick up a nice high grade slabbed one at some time in the future, but without any urgency.

I plan to buy 200 sets of the P&D rolls. My prediction is that the resale of these rolls, once sold out from the mint, will be profitable, and I use such profits to buy more valuable coins. Anyway, that's my plan. Pat

    I just want a nice MS66 in a PCGS slab. That's all.

Purchasing coins intended for circulation from the mint is ludicrous and a huge waste of money. At just about the same time, they are available at banks for face value.

As for the nickels - as long as they spend for five cents, that's my intent.

I might get a few rolls from the bank. But I'm hoping that I'll get more old nickels than new ones.

I will buy the rolls from the mint. Already have Westward Journey P and D Peace and Keelboat in PCGS MS 67. Don't have the Peace in P- MS 67-way too much money now-going for 280 on ebay when they come up for auction.
  • Ill probably buy 5-10 sets with the hope that when they sell out, I can get a few for myself free of charge.

Thats my plan too,,,,,buy 100+ 2 roll sets

May go to the Nickel XChange in WASH DC on Tuesday.......who is betting the gov't has pre-wrapped these P mints in mint wrappers for distribution at face?
  • buy 50 sets, putem away and forget about them.

That was my plan too. But I think that too many people are planning this. If so it will be a costly lesson. A lot of things could work in this favor however. If the quality of the bison is crappy people will want to seach mint rolls for nice examples (even though it does not really make a difference). Also if a variety were to come out then they will go up

Get in and get out quick......this is not a buy and hold strategy.

You are correct, too many people buying these, but I'm betting around the same amt available from the Mint. Just look at the Peace Medal 2 roll sets selling at $35, add a quicker sellout and a nice design, and presto! a $40 set.

Again, I dont mind making 100%+ profit. I'm only looking for $20 on the secondary market.

I was also in on the 99 silvers (200+ sets) at issue. Also on the buffalo $ at issue. I have been sitting on the sidelines till now.

  • just curious but....are the Denvers usually struck better than the Phils or is that just my young imagination??
    Thanks all

  • I am going to stock up on a few mint roll sets - enough for our 13 grandchildren, and a few for myself - maybe a few for possibly selling, should the opportunity arise . . . and some from the bank, to just sort through and hold onto, and trade for some P mints. Anyone need to trade their P's for D's? (With a little help from my friend - calling LS!) image

Denver quality over the last 40 years has generally been much better but
Philadelphia has been closing the gap in the last four years.

  • I think the strategy for these should be the same for any newly minted clad coin: spend 'em if ya got 'em. Unless of course, you find a really nice one. In that case, have it slabbed by PCGS. Then, sell it on Ebay. The "Slab Ticket Collectors" (registry set players) will pay you big bucks for it.

I subscribe to 1 P&D yearly mint set (all coins) for myself to put in my albums and I've got 3 yearly proof set collections going. Other than that, no plans for rolls or special sets.

Personally, I think it's kind of cool that the buffalo is returning to the nickel for a brief time. Too bad the Indian didn't also.

  • I learned my lesson with the State Quarter First Day Coin Covers. I can remember paying ridiculous prices for MA and PA....and now...you can get them for 25% of what I paid. I think once all the "hype" dies down...all four of the 2004 rolls will again be selling for - at or just above - original mint release price. I can't believe the US Mint Peace rolls are going for $45+ right now.

I have changed my mind about buying 20 sets of bisons....and I have decided to grab just 4 or 5 sets. I just found out that I am going to be a father in October...and I want to have a few rolls to tuck away for my son-or-daughter-to-be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
