I would love to have a full-time career in Numismatics, and think I could do a damn good job at it, cause I have a broad based knowledge of coins, have a good grading eye, great personality, lots of experience from years of collecting/ vest pocket trading and most recently assisting a dealer friend at some off the larger national shows.

The problem is as most stated, I have a secure job, with decent pay, and good benefits. Being young myself with three young children and spouse, I have to know that I have a job to go to each day, and that its not going to get slow, or possibly end in the near future??

John, your offersounds good to but 1.) I'm not an eBay Guru, and 2.) I'm not sure I'd want to relocate to Florida either.

Living in Florida for over twelve years, and not quite ready to retire from a job I love ( at least not for another seven or eight years ) I wouldn't mind working with a numismatic firm (on a retail level, or with a grading company in Sarasota) when the time was right. I've collected for forty four years and have collected most 19th and 20th century material and have a sharp eye for the nuances in grading. Occasionally I err in decisions on grades, but not too often. Gradeflation in recent years has me a bit stumped on occasions though.

The Florida part, yes. I leave Colorado twice a year to scuba dive, sail and salt-water fly fish. Just bought 25% interest in a 41-foot sailboat that lives in the bahamas in the summer and the Keys in winter. Plan to retire there, and that's close.

    The coin part, no.

Gads, that would be interesting, but ... I can't afford the pay cut! Besides, why risk numismatics becoming "work" instead of pleasure ...

At some point, I'd love to do something like this as a second career. Once we get in the financial position where I could comfortably take a pretty hefty pay cut, I'd be all over it.

I'm just not sure I could deal with the pay cut it would entail...yet. But there are few people I envy more than those who love their job, and I'd like to eventually have a job where I'm not obsessed with retiring early because I'd like the job so much.

Once we build our investment portfolios up a bit to the point where we could tap a little of it each year to augment other income...I'm on it! image

I don't want to take the pay cut for now. When I retire I may think about those options.

I have actively considered it. I am building my grading skills and have been contimplating taking the ANA course this summer. I would need to be sure that the income was sufficient.

Not sure I could get the family to move, but if the right opportunity came along, it might not be too difficult.

I am currently in sales and work trade shows pretty regularly. "Working" a coin show would be much more interesting. I have an interest in what lies in front of me, what customers bring to me, and what other exhibitors have to offer. I currently travel a lot, so I wouldn't mind going to shows, being a buyer, etc.

It will be a sign of the top of the market when more people consider leaving otherwise productive careers to become coin dealers (IMO).

It's interesting that there appears to be great demand for employees in the coin business. I'm experiencing a little deja vu'. This is particularly fascinating:

I'd never make the cut 'selling' coins, or working a table, and could not make a living at it...
But, my dream job would be to take what I do, and do it for one of the major coin houses...
So, if anyone is running a $20,000,000 plus auction house or other coin related biz, and looking for an experienced COO... I'd be all over that. Do what you do around things you love!

I've had fun dealing the last 7 years but I'm just too honest and have missed my family too much.

It's awfully easy money if you know what you're doing.

I've made many friends and will continue to play via a web-site.

Now here we go. I think that's funny, cuz I know you mean it in good natured fun. But that's what the OF was, too. And you're not an OFer.

Bottom line, this forum will morph into a type of OF, but it won't be the OFers doing it. Then what is C gonna do?

Oh shoot, I conveyed my thought poorly. There's nothing wrong with it! It was a good line, and I know Michael laughed if he read it.

It's human nature to kid around like this, but we're told we can't do it here. The OF was the relief valve for this place.

You're absotively posilutely right. I just know Michael never participated in the OF. And I know him well enough to know that line would have him rolling on the floor, but...again that's what PM is for nowimage

I like what I collect, and nobody is going to influence that. I do it for fun, not profit, and nobody is going to influence that either, so my answer is a big fat definitive NO! (Besides, I don't ever want to be a wannabe!)

Michael of Pikachu icon. I just visited him last night for 90 minutes and drooled over some of his holdings. Didn't know he was ever over at OFimage This is a guy who would be in heaven as a fulltime numismatist. He already is, just doesn't get paid or appreciated enough as such though.

    Hmmmmm,

    Pros

    1. The perfect way to escape from my wife six days a week image,
    2. Learn a lot more about this fascinating business
    3. Make a little money
    4. I loved living in florida

    Cons

    1. I'd miss my wife (sometimes) image
    2. I might discover the coin business isn't fun anymore
    3. Make LITTLE money

I can't afford to now, busy running my business (7 days a week, 90+ hours) but when I get tired of it and sell out I'll need something to do besides fish and read books so yes maybe I would someday.image

and oh yeah - I could only work for someone who was honest duh

As a numismatist, sure I'd love it. Problems, I like the mid-west so I'm not all that interested in moving. Two, I'm a numismatist not a grader, a buyer, or a salesman. Three, I normally prefer to work seconds or third shifts, preferably alone but I can work with others who are also able to work independantly. I don't socialize well. Four, I don't like big cities. I grew up in one and now I live in a rural community and I enjoy it. But I don't drive so long commutes to work would be bad unless the winters are very mild. (I still can't find gloves that work well on a motorcycle at ten below. My bike REALLY hates ice and snow too, and a long commute on moped in ice and snow is very tiring.)

I would, and I suspect I will some day. But if I do, and who I do it with, will almost certainly be a result of friendships, personalities, ethics and philosophies I share with them, more than anything else.
    When in doubt, don't.

Would love it, it would certainly get me out of cooking(though I don't mind that much) and I love numismatics/learning moreso.

Since you don't strike me as a cretin, David.........oh, never mind.

If I was in the right place around the right people, I would probably enjoy numismatics as in studying coins in great detail. In fact, I have a few pots on the burners down that direction. But I also have a lot of distractions, meaning I also do several other unrelated things with about the same level of dedication wich keeps all of them from finding any serious approach to completion. And this is retirement for me. As for someone actually employing me as a numismatist, that would be funny as I completely lack any of the typical credentials associated with that.

I'd do it in a heart beat. I worked for a coin dealer for about three years and loved it. You have to take the good with the bad, and the bad really isn't that bad. What's not to like? Traveling? Post office trips? Oh how terrible, lol.
