My very first Shilling!!!!!

Nothing earth shattering, but for me not knowing anything about Shillings, it's a great start, i like it... I been wanting to get into the shillings, and florins, but need to start small and learn my way around, Won it from one of Cameron's auctions tonight so i bought it from someone i trust!!!!

I bought a 1861/16 unc. Maundy from Lloyd awhile back...i have resisted at great lengths...but i love some of these darkside coins, i have to be careful though, i know Morgans, but these are new to me...i have alot of learning to do...BUT IT IS GONNA BE FUN!!!!!

They sure do make everyone feel comfortable, that's for sure...and answer even the goofiest questions with respect....They are top notch!!!!!

I doubt that anyone will get a stupid answer on here...i have noticed everyone will give an answer based on their best judgement and EVERYONE is very honest when they don't know and gives a very complimentary opinion and defers to and recommends their fellow members to answer.....

The Shilling (then called a Testoon) was first issued during the reign of King Henry VII, it was a silver coin about the size of a Half Dollar with a value of 12 Pennies. It was last issued with a date of 1970. To me it is very sad that the British no longer use this coin!

Thanks Dude!!! I have found that i like the Shillings up until 1901 with the Queens portrait the most...The designs are absolutely fantastic, and so are the Florins!!! I especially like the "young" portraits with the "lace" at the bust...guess i am kinda weird but the detail is exceptional!!!!

I have smoe British halfpennies, but don't know about anything about the shillings. If you ever
decide to get into Canadian coins, I've been collecting them for about 4 years and have a Charleton guide about them, if I can be
of any help to you

Nice shilling. You will find that last 8 in the date is struck over a 7, in all likelihood.

There seems to be a "Flat" side on the upper right side of the 8..

The "8 over 7" variety in this case is more common than the standard "8."

Interestingly enough, most dealers don't seem to distinguish the two varieties, even when it comes to price. Even if you had the scarcer one, it wouldn't be worth more in most cases. Just a point of discussion, mainly.

Many years ago, before i went sixpence mad, i used to collect shillings.

Indeed one of my first coins was an 1887 shilling that i got from my father, having a 102/3 year old coin was something amazing to me back then. Careful Victorian Jubilee issues can be addictive.

I know i once put together an 1887 year set, half svereign to threepence, okay i never managed to get the sovereign. I eventually sold them all off when i moved wholesale into the 17th/18th centuries.
