What is sniping?

It's bidding on an ebay auction with only a few seconds remaining in the auction (usually 7 or fewer--1 second left means you're good)

Sniping is an evil practice that should be illegal for anyone living in the Chicago area.

Usually it's a good thing; make sure your watch has a second hand.

  • There is a company that automatically snipes for you.....and it's relatively cheap.

    Go to: www.auctionsniper.com

I have used them several times....I think I've sniped 7 out of 8...

    Good luck -

As others said, sniping is bidding in an auction with only seconds to go until it closes. The reason one does this is to deny other bidders from coming back and outbidding you.

Link to sniping software that works just as well as AuctionSniper but doesn't cost as much.

    Wow you guys are serious!

  • I used to think sniping was bird hunting with a flashlight …. Sniping doesn’t bother me because I just bid what I am willing to pay for an item. If I win, great! If I don’t, I don’t want to pay that much anyway. Sniping would go away if eBay held the auction open for five minutes after any bid.

No, it wouldn't. It would just get more complicated, but easily programmable nonetheless. If you like I can go into the details on how such a scheme would work, but trust me that it would piss off "normal" bidders even more than sniping.

Some say that one is risking spending an eternity in hell for sniping. Some people get very upset with snipers who simply will not see the error of their ways.

    Sniping is wrong.

When two expeditions of scientists, financed by the Royal Academy, went forth to test my theory of relativity, I was convinced that their conclusions would tally with my hypothesis. I was not surprised when the eclipse of May 29, 1919, confirmed my intuitions. I would have been surprised if I had been wrong. I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein- quoted in Saturday Evening Post interview (1929)

Snipping is very satisfying though. There really is no question whether one should snip or not.

Sniping is wrong but snipping is right.

  • sniping bad. Just tell me how much. I don't do ebay but I think sellers snipe sometimes to protect prices. Also sellers must be hoping for a bidding war inflating the price. Otherwise they should just say how much they want.

Yes, I think that's what an auction is all about...

I don't disagree, but I do have many better things to do than to wait by my computer with a stopwatch, constantly clicking the refresh icon.
