Topps TIFFANY???

Can someone explain to me the difference between Topps and Topps Tiffany? The cards look the same to me so I can't figure out how to distinguish between the two. What's the history behind this Tiffany variety and why did Topps name one of their products after a jewelry brand?

    Easy to spot the diffrence Tiffanys have a glossy front. The regular topps the early years up to 1993 or so do not. And the backs instead of a card board look are a deep solid color. Example 1986 Topps the back is a dull red the tiffany version is a bright red. DO a search on ebay and look at a few tiffanys then the regular version.

    I believe the Tiffany version has a gloss, and the back of the card is white stock, rather than cardboard. I have no idea why this is in my mind, but it is, so I'll throw it out there: I think the name has to do with a blue box that the set came in.

    Actually, the term "TIFFANY" was invented by the card collecting hobby itself, in order distinguish those cards from the regular Topps cards.

    Topps has never branded any of its cards "TIFFANY". Topps simply names these cards Special Edition Glossy.

    These cards have high gloss on the fronts and are printed on heavy white card stock. Other than that, they look exactly the same as regular Topps cards.

    Topps only released these cards in full sets near the end of the year. Limited production, expecially when compared to the regular issue.

    1987 had the most sets printed. I think 1989 or 1990 is the rarest of all "Tiffany" sets.

    Only thing to add is the Tiffany brand started in 1984 - sold only thru hobby dealers - thicker white stock and the print was reported at 10,000. The lowest print run I remember hearing about is 5000 - like in 1985.

    Lowest print run was 5,000 sets in 1986. '84 and '85 had 10,000. '87 had a quadrillion (50,000). Not sure about the print runs for '88 thru '91, but '91 is the scarcest of those years (IMO).

    The 04 Standard Catalog of BB Cards has the 85T Tiffany at 5,000 sets. Which source are you using?

    Any idea how much and 87 Topps Traded Tiffany Tony Gwynn Mint 9 might fetch? I came across one in some lots that I purchased and am looking to get rid of it. Anyways, I have not seen anything on SMR for this card, and nothing to compare it to. Thanks.

    Here's some production numbers according to Beckett Almanac of Baseball Cards:
    (these number apply to both standard set and traded set)


    1984: 10,000
    1985: 5,000
    1986: 5,000
    1987: 30,000
    1988: 25,000
    1989: 15,000
    1990: 15,000
    1991: no production numbers given, but estimates 30x value compared to regular issue

    When I say that '85 had 10,000 sets, what I'm implying is that it had 10,000 sets divided by 2. Wasn't that obvious?

    I believe another way to tell a Tiffany card is on the back it says "printed in Ireland" or something like that.
